Boston University
University of Miami
George Washington University

These 3 schools have almost identical SAT averages, and are similarly located in cities. I want to apply to one of them as a low-match / almost safety-type school.

Which is the best? This is of course very subjective, but in your opinions, which would be the overall best school to attend, and/or which might give the best aid? So factor your opinion on whatever you want, I'm just curious about these 3 schools. School stereotypes, the type of crowd, prestige, stories, anything.

If it matters, I'm low-income (less than $25K/year, no major assets) and have SATs at the high end of their averages. (2080, 740M 670CR, 670W, will retake for ~2250). I am interested in anything from IR, political science, business, the liberal arts, cultural studies, history, linguistics, math, etc... I want to go to either Law or Business school. Thanks

I have the same interest as you, including the universities George Washington University and Boston University. As it appears, George Washington University is very difficult to attend, I think accepetance rate is hovering around 30%. Boston University was really high with my interest until I learn the university does not do well with financial aid, even if your low income… some have been offered zero. I will look more into Boston University.

LogicWarrior: Would this put me at a safety range for BU?

Coolbrezze: Same here… BU is more of a safety but gives low aid, GWU is less of a safety but gives great aid. The problem is that I’m looking for a school to be a safety and give great aid… :/

Basketball >> Football >>> Hockey
Great need-aid >>> stingy aid
DC = Boston = Miami

sooo… my low-match/safety is GWU?

There’s no point in applying to BU or UMiami if I won’t be able to pay… but is it bad if I make GWU my least selective private school? I’m applying to many other, more selective private schools, like USC and Duke, as well as lower UCs like UCD and UCSB. Maybe I don’t even need GWU because the UCs fill that role?

so confused, any advice appreciated

GWU is the most expensive school… well what is your prospective major? if its anything like international relations or politics then do GWU, if not, i would apply to BU

^ I’m not sure about a prospective major yet, but “I am interested in anything from IR, political science, business, the liberal arts, cultural studies, history, linguistics, math, etc… I want to go to either Law or Business school.”

GWU is the most expensive school but that doesn’t matter to me, because at my income bracket, they apparently give reallllly generous aid. On the other hand, I don’t think I would even be able to pay for BU.

I’m starting to think I’ll just apply to GWU. My only qualm is that it doesn’t make me feel safe enough, admissions-wise.

George Washington University is not a safety school, I would say apply and see what happens… even if your get rejected, it wouldn’t look nice, but at least you know what they would decide.

UMiami has good merit aid. They automatically award you merit aid (up to $24,000/yr) if your SAT and GPA are above certain numbers. BU, on the other hand, you’ll have to apply for their scholarships separately which is a big hassle. GW I’m not sure what the situation is with merit aid so I can’t comment on that.

With an admissions rate hovering at 37%, GW is a safety for very few people. I would honestly say it’s a match for you, not a low match, really. BU is probably a low match because of its acceptance rate of about 55%, which is much more in your favor.

UMiami is easier to get into than you would think. I got in with a 3.4 and a 1960. and the scholarship cutoff this year was 1350 or 31 on SAT/ACT (I had 1310  ) Couldn’t go cuz it was too expensive for me.

Well, GWU’s lower acceptance rate might simply be the result of a large pool of applicants with lower SAT scores. My SAT is above average for GWU… that’s the only reason I saw it as a safety, instead of a match.

I’m debating either BU or GWU for a financial/entrance safety right now… I really want to avoid applying to both, because I already have more than enough schools to apply to. Since some of you are saying GWU is more of a match, I might just go with BU.
