The place is best known for political science and international relations. What about its English department? I tried to find the answer in an old thread from a few years back but there were no takers. Anyone know?

What do you intend to do with your English major?

Read through the graduation requirements for the GWU English program, and read through the course descriptions in the course catalogue. That will give you an idea about the classes. You also may be able to find syllabi for individual courses on the GW website, as well as information about the specific professors’ research and publication interests.

Eventually publishing, but how does it rank in general with, let’s say, UVA or George Mason both of which have good reputations?

I have no idea how the departments rank, and for something like English, rankings may not be important. Perhaps your English teachers can advise you on that one.

If you know the industry you would like to work in, it is perfectly OK to call the career centers at each of these universities and ask about job placement for their English graduates in that industry.
