Gym at John Wooden Center

Is the gym at John Wooden Center packed with students?

Particularly with weights, are there long lines to use them or the gym is generally free most of the time?

For anyone living close to LA, are there other gyms near by that can be used if the JWC is too packed?

Honestly, the gym is very nice in terms of ammenities. However, it caters to way too large of a population.

The hours of the gym (at least on the weekends) are very poor and the fact that not only is it used by students, faculty, and anyone associated with the university, but memberships are also sold to people who live in and around the area.

Generally, the gym is pretty packed anywhere from 9AM on. I guess maybe I’m just spoiled by my home 24…

I am frequently at JWC and honestly I don’t see what all the nagging is about, I barely ever have to wait in line for anything. As long as UCLA keeps the population size at the SAME LEVEL as it is now, it’s fine. However, I will get really ****ed off if they start letting any more outside people into the gym (or if they increase the number of admits = more people at JWC).

Peak times in the afternoon are from 5-7.

I go to the gym regularly and arguments claiming the gym is too crowded are way overblown. The only time the gym is very crowded is during the first 2 weeks of every quarter (especially winter) when students try to get in shape. The running machines/ellipticals are very popular however, so I recommend running outside on the track/around campus (its more fun that way too). I mainly use the gym for weights and I’ve never had a problem getting my workout done in a timely manner.

There is an LA fitness nearby but the you pay for the Wooden (very cheap) in your student fees every quarter so there’s no point.
