Gym membership- worth it? Did you use it?

I was wondering if you could sign up for a gym membership AFTER you arrive on campus like...a month into the semester, so september-ish? On the packet, it says you need to sign up by July 10th, but I want to see how busy I am, how far it is from where I live (how lazy I get... =]) and if I'll actually use my gym membership.

Also, if freshman have to take a PE class, do we need a gym membership or is there anyway to get enough of a workout in PE class?

Thanks! =]]

Yes...you can sign up for a membership at any time during the academic year. My roomie bought her in November.

Also...I signed up for my membership in July before coming to campus. I didn't go to the gym until October and that's when I was finally billed. I think they do that as a courtesy to you, in case you don't go :-)

yes and yes! i did it just because i didnt want to gain the freshman 15. the gym facilities on campus are really good with plenty of weights and machines to use. i also did the entire year membership. because it has been nice outside, ive been running around beebe lake and the plantations, but during the winter, i just went to helen newman on north

YES. probably the only thing ive bought at cornell where i feel like i actually got all of my moneys worth. the gym itself (at least on north) isnt impressive...but i use it at least 5 times a week and love it. its a good release from work and stress.

I mean it depends... if you take a hardcore gymclass then you'll get enough exercise. I didn't really have time to use my gym membership. But honestly, if u want to avoid the freshman 15 follow these advices:

Walk to class, dont take the bus. Its almost a mile (depending on where you live,) and you are depriving yourself of nice hill workout by walking to class.

Don't get trashed---booze actually has ALOT of empty carbs

AVOID the BROWNIES at appel--- I know its DELICIOUS and free (unlimited.) Control yourself. Try making a hummus wrap or a grilled turkey sandwich instead of taking the fried stuff

Avoid getting food at Nasties--noough said. I think thats where I gained my freshman 15

just accept the fact that many people get bigger in college. I mean its natural depending on your body type. As long as you eat healthy and exercise. Whatever happens...happens.

Good luck!

2 questions
Can I purchase the summer and full year membership? Because the packet says to choose one
And where does Nasties come from? I see no connection to Bear Necessities...

cant answer the first question for sure except to say that i bought a full year membership at cornell at the start of the first semester.

i dont think anyone really knows where bear "nasties" came from...the food is actually not nasty at all. i mean its greasy and mostly terrible for you, but like most cornell food it tastes good.

I personally feel nasties comes from the nasty things their food can do to your GI tract if you eat too much of it :-D

wait, is nastie's like...a restaurant or a dining hall or...whaaaat? HAHAH. i'm avoiding that for SURE. okay, awesome, i'll get the gym membership when i get to campus.

It's not more expensive then is it? thanks!

no...nasties is a convenience store/grill that serves pizzas, subs and fried snack food

how expensive is the gym membership?

and what is with Cornell nickel and diming us. Most of the other colleges I had applied to gave students cable and access to their gym facilities without additional cost, also unlimited internet bandwidth. For the 50k cornell is gonna cost per year I don't see why these aren't included.

get used to the nickel and diming...it's a hallmark of the Cornell experience :-)

it sure is...

In my experience, my gym membership has been completely worth it, but I agree it makes sense to wait if you aren't sure you'll use it regularly enough to justify the cost.

I think gym and tv are kind of included in the $50K Cornell is charging us because like $1500 of that is title "Miscellaneous Expenses" which did say something about gym membership. I for one am going to take advantage of the gym facilities. and of course walk to class (appleapple)

^^My FA paid for my Cornell gym membership :-)
