do students have to pay extra to have access to workout facilities?

Nope it's free!
Here are the hours, they're open 'til midnight on East:
http://www.duke.edu/web/intramural/hours/

cool

are they any good? what equipment do they have? and how many people take advntage of these facilities?

during my visit i saw the gym- the epquipment was pretty good, and it was pretty packed..

shortage of treadmills i think...

wilson, the gym on west, is amazing. i've had a membership to a brand new 24 hr fitness, and these facilities are more extensive.

ellipticals, stair step machines, treadmills, rowing machines in the main area. 6 newly installed plasma tv's with audio broadcast on different radio channels (bring a radio, tune in, hear audio).

weight room....simply gorgeous. it has every piece of equipment you could imagine, the stuff is in great shape, and the music is strange and eclectic. people try to generalize that all the girls are on cardio machines and all the guys are in the weight room, but that's not always the case. you can find every sort of person there from students to faculty to employees.

the myriad of fitness classes and spinning classes ("cycling" as they call it) - http://www.duke.edu/web/intramural/fitness/ in addition to PE classes (i.e. the ones on the schedule are when you can, PE classes are when you have to always show up)

there's also quenchers in wilson, a smoothie bar with fresh cut fruit (kiwi, mango, strawberries, watermelon, oranges, etc), protein shakes, and tons of energy bars.

and if you hop on a c-3 bus you can be there in about 8 minutes from east.

on east we have brodie....not at all as extensive, but it's a good deal closer. 5 ellipticals, 4 treadmills, some rowing, bike, and stair step machines. while this may seem like too few, they used to only have 3 ellipticals and 2 treadmills....but over spring break they brought in more equipment (yes, our student government actually does tangible things).

and both gyms have basketball and racquetball courts and you can rent equipment (for free, at least basketballs).

The gym is really easy access on East, from what I saw
