For those familiar with the place, how is the gym in terms of overall quality, number of equipments, features/programs, amount of people that are usually there, etc. and what time is it open during the school year?

Oh, nice topic, especially since I just started going to the gym again. I’d also like to add a couple questions. Is the gym open to all students whenever it is open, or do you have to sign up for a class? Most important to me, do they have a power rack? That’s a 4-post cage usually used for squats and deadlifts.

i also want to know if 24 fitness or la fitness was near the school.

^ here is your answer

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=24+hour+fitness+la+jolla

the gyms are amazing, RIMAC is huge and Main Gym has a lot of equipment also. The gym is open from like 8am-midnight or something like that. you can use it at any time.

leaftye: yes there is a power rack

WowCantWait: buying a gym membership is a waste of money imo, you are paying fees for multiple amazing gyms already.

can someone tell me if they use Kg plates in RIMAC ?

Thanks Arctic! I agree with you about not paying for another gym membership. Besides, at the campus gym, you know there will be lots college age girls…or guys, or girls and guys, whatever works for you. Actually, that could be reason enough to pay for another gym where there’s less hotness to distract from a good workout. Fortunately I’m nearsighted, so my workouts don’t suffer. lol

do the gyms offer like dance classes or things like that? supplementary workout classes outside of just using the workout machinery?

kg is a small conversion from lb weights…

unless you mean bumper plates which only denote kg

then yes, there are plenty of olympic bumper plates in rimac

sarahhhh: there are no dance classes offered through the gym as far as I know.

there are recreation classes that you can sign up for per quarter, most classes are 20-60$ depending on the class. more technical ones like advanced tennis can run a little higher.

look on recreation.ucsd.edu and hit classes are teh top,

I had like two suitemates take hip hop classes this quarter at RIMAC so I know it’s possible

i know that i’m gonna get tired of plain old exercising with weights and running and biking, etc. i just want something that’s gonna make it easier to keep it up. i came back from orientation today (woo!) and my OL told me that she’s taking dance classes for like $30 for like 8 weeks of 2 sessions per week or something. it worked out to like $1-2 per session, which is really good. it’s still worth it even if you do have to pay something.

There are also intramural sports you can play by the way.
Check out the recreation.ucsd.edu page also and click on IM sports. I really encourage you to play. You can make a team yourself and sing up. The website has deadlines for that stuff. =]

I was going to get a gym membership before school started and then I remembered that UCSD offered the gym. So I postponed my workout until I get into UCSD for money reasons as well as just being lazy!

Maybe I should have gotten the 24/7 fitness pass… Not sure… Meh, I feel fatter already!
