Hi, I just completed my freshman year at a tough school and will become a sophomore in a few months at the same school. I took H (honors) Geometry, thinking that it will be just fine since I got a high A on algebra 1, but received a C+ on first semester and dropped out. I was not lazy and really worked hard but it was really tough, especially the tests my teacher gave. Next year, I was wondering if I should apply for H Algebra 2 or just go to cp and receive an easy A.
To be honest, it really depends on the student - and the teacher. Geometry is vastly different from Algebra II. For me, it was the other way around in that Geometry was the easy A and Algebra II I struggled with, but there were a lot of factors a play there. I took Geometry in an accelerated class in middle school, so I was with friends who could help me through rough patches, but when I took Algebra II as a freshman, I had to mix with older students I didnt’t know and an unfriendly teacher. Those things certainly didn’t help my grades.
If you feel comfortable with the concepts and if you have a strong support system that you are WILLING TO USE, then I’d say go for it. Algebra and geometry are very different subjects, so if yoy struggled with one, you might not have so much trouble with the other.
Why do you think Geometry was so tough?
I agree with @wherevioletsgrow that it largely depends on the kind of person you are. Personally, I absolutely love Algebra and completely hate Geometry. Maybe you’re just an “Algebra person”, but it’s up to you to figure that out.
I finished my sophomore year taking both Honors Geometry and Alg II and it was easy I ended with A+ averages for both classes. I personally think Geometry requires a whole different mindset because it is more based on reasoning/logic to solve some problems and I HATED proofs but after doing some they are not that bad. I think Geometry was really easygoing (but the teacher was so bad in my school) and Alg II was sooo easy except for this one chapter called Linear Programming ( it was the first Alg test I received a B on ); either than that I actually enjoyed Alg 2 thoroughly because I understood it (maybe because I am more natural in math idk) but I personally find both classes easy and enjoyable. In the end I think Alg II was so much easier than Geometry because it was more straightforward than Geometry.
Algebra and Geometry are completely different animals. It’s like asking whether ice cream tastes better than steak-- there’s no real basis for comparison.
Some kids who struggle in Algebra suddenly find themselves with an A in Geometry, and their heads spin as they wonder what the fuss is about. Others, who have always found themselves acing every math course they’ve ever taken, struggle with Geometry, not even knowing what to ask.
Kids who excel in geometry tend to be the kinds of kids who enjoy puzzles, who enjoy letting the problem lead them. You don’t always know exactly what approach you’ll be taking; you start with what you know and see what you can pull from that. Some kids love the challenge; others hate not having a definite set of directions.
Algebra tends to be more straight forward: “if it’s a quadratic, you set one side to zero, factor, and set each factor equal to zero” kind of thinking.
That said, I think you’ll eventually need to know some geometry. So I don’t think that dropping the course on the basis of a grade of C is necessarily the wisest approach. It’s OK to struggle sometimes.
Most people are good at Algebra and suck at Geometry, and vice versa.
Algebra is very plug and chug while Geometry is more analytical.
I would consider taking H Algebra 2.
