H just URM mailed me.. And I'm Asian

As the title suggests, I got a rather unexpected email from the UMRP folks. And I'm Korean. I have always marked my ethnicity as "Asian" in every standardized test I've ever taken, so it's not that H thinks I'm Hispanic or something either. So what's up with this? Any other Asians who got this email?

Yes. (10char)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1171449-i-found-out-harvard-considers-me-minority.html

I actually did run into that thread, but I’m not sure if the OP of that thread is considered URM or just a minority. In this case it seems H thinks I’m URM.

Looking for the others, but Asians have gotten “special attention” from Harvard.

Yup. I’m an Asian. A Chinese Asian in the Bay Area. From my point of view, I can’t be any more part of the majority so I personally think the email is just another one of those fail recruitment things.

We are a minority haha just not a URM

^ Yeah, i know but we got URM-mailed, I mean what the heck.

I think I’ll just stop worrying about it :)

I got that same URM email and am asian

I got it as well, but it just says “Undergraduate Minority Recruitment Program,” so it doesn’t necessarily mean URM.

lol got that too. as you can guess by my name, i’m asian.

I guess we’re still just a minority then. Aw, oh well. Let’s grill the UMRP guy who contacted us and enjoy the rest of the summer. :D

It won’t change anything such as the Asian admission rate but may certainly increase the applicants pool and improve the selectivity…

At Harvard, no improvement in selectivity worries me, it’s already the worst haha

Has anyone responded to the email and got a better feeling? It would be interesting to know if they chose recipients based on PSAT score or not.

What are your PSAT scores?

239 for my S.

^231 for me.

231 for me.

I’m 100% sure that a letter of this sort was sent out two years ago as well to any minority student scoring above a certain cutoff point on the PSAT. Asians are still minorities, you know ;).

Harvard considers Asians as minorities but the admission percentages are capped.

I got this e-mail, too.
But I just lol’d.

Harvard doesn’t need to recruit Asians. The Asians come to them!

Any follow ups on this?
