H.S. Junior Seeking for Colleges

Hello!

I'm currently a high school junior and rank on the upper 7% of my class. My grades are A's and B's. However, this year I received a C for my Math III Honors class. I've had the most B's on my junior year (which is not shocking, I suppose).

I'm a green card resident and my ethnicity is Asian. I am currently in four extracurricular activities and I will be joining in Track again this year for spring (making it five).

For one thing, I'm not exactly sure what to do.

My parents want me to do Premedicine and I'm more leaning towards Software Engineering or Business. I suppose you can blame my getting a C in Math due to me being overly obsessed in programming this year.

I would like advice on what possible colleges/universities I can apply to. If possible, colleges/universities for all three majors (Premedicine, Software Engineering, Business). I was thinking of attending U.T.S.A. or N.Y.U. but any other suggestions would be nice!

Thank you!

If money is no object, then you’ll have lots of choices.

If you’ll need/qualify for financial aid, then NYU isn’t a good choice. They’re lousy with aid.

How much will your parents pay each year for your education?

Since you’re unsure of your major, you’re right to consider schools that could prepare you for any of your choices - pre-med, Software Engineering, or Business.

Luckily, any school that is good in bio, chem, math and physics can prepare you for med school. All you’ll need is a strong GPA and a strong MCAT, and you’ll get into med school. :)

Are you in-state for Texas?

What about Texas A&M?

UT Dallas?

Texas Tech?

Before we can recommend any more schools, we need to know what your finance situation is.

IF you’ll need aid, you’ll need to find out what your EFC is and whether your family can pay it.
However, if money is no object, then awesome. You’ll have lots of choices.

Also, tell us what kind of school you want…large, small, quiet, rah rah big sports, warm weather, cold-snowy weather, big city, rural, college town, ???

Money is not entirely a big issue. My parents have prepared a college fund for me. I’m more concerned about my grades and accomplishments, if they’re good enough.

Yes, I am in state for Texas and I have relatives that live close to A&M and UTSA.

Well, I’d really rather have it that the college is situated in a city so things will be more accessible.

Did you take the SAT yet? Or perhaps the PSAT?

Post those scores if you can; you’ll get more feedback if you do so.

Good for you!!! But, do find out if they’ve included the costs of private schools (about $50k per year) or only the costs of an in-state public (about $25k per year). That will make a huge difference. :)

Since you’re interests are in programming, that may be where you’re headed. But, you must also do well in math!!! Calculus I , II and maybe III will be required in college for Comp Sci or Computer Engineering majors. ;)

What are your feeling about medicine? If it’s not for you, then don’t consider it. :)

How did you do on your PSAT? Have you taken the SAT and ACT yet (take both!! )

I’m a terrible test taker so I only have 161 on my PSAT. I am going to take SAT in January and ACT in April 2010.

I seem to be doing good in a regular math program, but my school offers a different kind of math program (Integrated Math Program) and I honestly don’t find it efficient at all which is why I get discouraged.

You may have a “time pacing” issue. Get a practice book and work on your pacing with a timer. This will also help you build up your endurance for taking tests over a period of time. :)

I think so too. I bought a 2010 SAT practice book today so it should help me out some.
