H1N1 flu

My D, an RA, said there are many students w/ flu symptoms at Bucknell and several confirmed H1N1 cases. A student at my other D’s college died from H1N1 last Friday.

My D is sick right now. She says it is a cold and she doesn’t feel at all like she has the flu. But I also know she does not want to miss classes. I keep telling her to take this seriously (she says she does), get a flu shot and another when the H1N1 shot becomes available.

I realize, in all the things we get for our kids when they are going off to college, we didn’t include a thermometer. I’ll be sending one to her, in the first goody package this semester, this week.

Please tell your kids to NOT go to class if they feel like the are getting sick or have a fever.

I am sorry to hear your daughter is sick. I know that my daughter said most of her friends have a cold there nothing more but she is hearing about flu cases here and there. If you can convince your D to go to student health services, I am sure they can test her if you need peace of mind and they will probably give her tamiflu if they suspect flu. My daughter said she knows of a few kids sent home for 5 days with the flu. All you can do is remind your daughter to wash with antiviral soap, wash down door knobs with clorax wipes. She should go to student health with any fever and body aches. Good luck, I hope she gets better fast. Most healthly college students with the flu will get over it quickly.

they send home even those kids who do not have swine… unfortunately.

My S is one of what I believe to be about 50 students at BU who have come down with
H1N1 to this point. He was given the option to stay or return home to VA and elected to stay. He will finish his 5th day of isolation and if his temperature is normal, he will be returning to class.

The flu test is only 80% effective and they do not administer it in all cases any more. Most students who have presented with symptoms have just been recommended to go home.

However, though “the swine” is a big topic on campus, no one is seriously ill as far as I know. Several of my friends have come down sick, and the worst part of it for them has been the isolation for 5 days and then making up the missed work. I think by now we have recognized as a campus that this isn’t any worse than the regular flu we usually get in the winter, even though we do have more simlutaneous cases than usual.

Good sense BB–but the year is young!!

Never before have I witnessed so much propaganda over a relatively harmless flu. Do not take any vaccinations for the swine flu, according to many in the medical field the vaccine is actually very dangerous and has been linked to inducing neurological disorders, sometimes fatal. Research the crap the government wants to put in your body before deciding.
