ha

yay im the first one to post in my school's thing...it makes me feel really lonely, though...

oh, and i just looked it up - the average freshman ACT is a 29.7...up from a 28.5 last year...i couldnt find how many National Merit scholars we have, though...im really curious...im talking to myself, now...great

All right, I'll bite. Tell us about IWU -- what you really like, what you dislike. Are you from the Chicago area?

i know some people who go to IWU. i also have been there several times during the summer for cello camp. just thought i'd add something to this poor thread.

yes, i live on the south side of Chicago. im surprised at how many people here are from that area. ...i shouldn't say 'here' cause im at home for the weekend... id say that i enjoy the fact that everyone is geared toward learning and nobody ive encountered thus far has even hinted at being a 'slacker' - there is a surprising number of non-drinking students and not a single person on my floor smokes (ive only seen two people smoking at all since i came here) the strong academic nature of so many of the students here definitely makes one want to compete and excel, but even if you don't, there are plenty who will offer help. also, the office of student activities always has something somewhat interesting planned and the medical staff at health services is too nice...really, you couldn't ask for a friendlier staff, adiministration, etc. you can tell they really care.

What about the campus, the dorms, the workload, the dating scene, the political climate, give us an inside look. D gets several pieces of mail but so far appears to prefer Knox (without a visit, she is probably a chem major) Did you consider any other LACs? What made you pick Illinois Wesleyan? Thanks for any help you can give.

What are you majoring in at IWU? Do you know anything about the English department and how good it is? My sister attends the school, but doesn't know anyone majoring in that department, so I'd appreciate it if you knew anything.. thanks a lot!

Hey Shrader! Sup?
We're all missing ya at Wesleyan. Back next semester right?

Nurm

Ooohh...
BTW, I'm also a first year student (don't like the word freshman, a lil sexist) in IWU. My majors are bio and philosophy. The bio department here is excellent, very hard. Gen bio's called intro to business just cos of the tendency of major change to business admin. The music and theatre departments are outstanding.

Hey Nurman! Sorry it took so long to get back to you...in fact, I'm sure that I've seen you since you posted that...yeah, I'll def be back next semester to make everyone crazy and play my geeetar in the hallways. To Sarah86 - Sorry about the wait...I haven't spent much time with my computer lately. I am majoring in History, prob with a minor in PoliSci. Also, I am unfamiliar with the English Dept. and I have only met one person so far who is majoring in English, but then again, I've been home since early November, due to medical reasons, so I might not be the best person to ask. To curmudgeon - the other schools i was looking at were UofChicago (rejected), UofIllinois@UC, St.Xavier U (which is down the block from my home, so that was based on convenience more than anything), UofIllinois@Chicago, ISU, Marquette, and Loyola. Wesleyan just stood out because of the beautiful campus, friendly staff/admin. people, and the fact that it is a small school with a good reputation where I would be surrounded by hard working people with interests similar to my own. Like I mentioned earlier, everyone I've come in contact with has been very supportive and friendly. I think my decision to come to IWU was pretty much solidified by my first visit. If any of what I said doesn't make sense, it has to be because I'm way too tired to read it over right now and I'm going to fall asleep before i finish answering curmudgeon completely...sorry about that - CrazyShrader

Thanks for replying!!!

I'm currently awaiting my decision from IWU.

For what it's worth, the guidance counselors at my daughters' high school absolutely love this school. I have met many alums who say they had a fabulous academic and social experience. I have also met students who said that they visited without any intention of attending, fell in love with the school and applied. We met the head of Admissions and he was great, also.

IWU gives good merit scholarship for ACT above 28, up to 10 K easily, so many good students from IL apply there. It is still majorly IL students school even if adcom people trying slowly to change it. Small, located near state public so there are always more social choices available. They have numbers for majors- so if one is planning to major in sciences, one will be competing for 80 seats planned for science major etc. Dorms/ those townhouses/ are stunning, luxurous, spaceous, gorgeous view.
My D liked it intially but after visit changed her mind. I still not sure what exactly was turn off for her. For me it was that I took there my D/ good grades, scores/ and my niece/ somewhat lower grades and scores/. Treatment was very evident and obvious- almost sign- do not apply for my niece and welcoming mat for my D. Since they were there together and we went campus tour and interviews at same time I felt bad for my niece...
She is amazing girl, very friendly with tons of excellent EC, her numbers were on low 50% side but still very acceptable...

lindalana, you and I seem to be talking to ourselves based on dates of other posts, but my D was accepted to IWU last month with a merit schoalrship that disappointed us--about 1/4 of tuition whereas she has half-tuition scholarships at other LACs. IWU is really close to home for us and she liked the school for that reason as much as anything else. On visiting, she found it to be on the conservative side "no one looks like me" is one comment my stylish, creative daughter said after visiting. I think there is limited diversity and the majority of students are Chicago collar county types--upper middle class, GOP families. Facilities seemed nice/new enough but not memorable. Beloit and Lawrence, Earlha, even OWU, are much higher on D's list.
