Hey so just wanted to get some input on something. Ive spoken to different faculty from Haas and ive been told that in general they like to see both semesters of calculus completed by the Fall of application so that they can use them to determine future potential. But they also said that it doesn’t impact your application negatively if you dont have all your prereqs done by the time you apply. So Im a little confused, do you guys think not having calculus done will affect my chances?
Normally I wouldnt worry about it, but the reason I ask is because I am able to take it in the fall but i’d rather wait until spring. At my school there is only 1 teacher that teaches the second semester of applied calculus and the word on the street is that he is no bueno. If I dont take caculus in the Fall then I will take stats so I dont think it will be too obvious that I’m holding off on the second semester. Anyways im stuck because if I take it in the fall I risk getting a B just because of this guys strict teaching style, but if I take it in the spring then that could make me less competitive Advice is appreciated!
I’d say take it in the Spring.
Getting a B is worse than putting it off for spring.
Actually haas has let ppl in with a b in Calc. I feel your pain, but to be the strongest applicant if you could take in fall and hold off the softball business class until spring. But I understand re teacher. There’s no other CCC to take Calc 2?
Lindy,
You can’t take calc 2 at another CC. Any Math series has to be taken at same CC for Haas.
@HumbleTeen …hmm, where does it say that? Is that only for business majors?
UCB counsellor who came to my CC told me that. I am sure it must be somewhere on the UC website.
Interesting post, Mike. I had seen some mixed reviews of the second semester calc class so that had me worried. I’ll also be in a similar dilemma, but only because I’ll be taking the first calc course in the fall anyway. Math certainly isn’t my strong suit, so it will be to my advantage to not have to worry about a B killing my chances … so long as that advantage outweighs the disadvantage of not having it done by fall when I apply.
@HumbleTeen I’ve never heard anything like that, so that’s interesting.
@HumbleTeen is kind of right. The wording is that Haas says that sequences should not be split up between colleges.
Well, I can’t say specifically for Hass but district classes are usually calibrated the same. Wow. I’d like to know if that’s true.
Best way is to call/email UC admissions and ask.
Even the counsellors at Foothill and De Anza told me to not split up any sequences between the two even though they are sister schools.
Just getting around to some updates and am not seeing where haas says Calc has to be taken at one CCC. I’ve done a far-reaching search. Do you by any chance know where it says that? Maybe the advisor got it wrong? I do know they say that for English. @HumbleTeen @spenceyboi
@briank8, any input?
No clue. I’ve heard sequences need to be taken at the same place, but don’t think I’ve really seen anything definitive.
Usually (although not always) the Calc sequence can be split up (assuming same term, semester or quarter) as Calc is pretty standardized across all platforms. I would like to know definitively, though. I may call Haas, as they don’t seem to have an email contact.
