Hello everyone. I'm going to apply to Haas this upcoming November and need some advice. According to assist.org, I need to take an additional writing or literature class, on top of the two English classes I took to complete my IGETC.

Does anyone know if it will go against my best interest if I take this class during the spring AFTER I apply? I'll have all my other requirements done by time of application, except I still need to take one more class to complete IGETC. I called the Berkeley advising, and they said as long as I state that I am going to have these classes planned for spring, it shouldnt affect my admission. Any comments? Thanks.

It isn't one of the "big" prereqs (calc, stats, macro & micro econ) so it shoudln't be a big deal.

Also, I'm sure someone will see this and can answer a small question. I'm going for Haas as well, which does not require IGETC. However, I don't see any reason why I shoudln't have it, but I've got a small problem. Haas requires a physical science and a biological science, and neither need a lab requirement. I've taken 3 science courses, never did a lab - but now I've learned that IGETC requires one lab (sigh). So, if I take a science course and do a lab in my SPRING semester, do I "have" igetc or don't I?

Wait, Haas doesn't require IGETC completion? huh, learn something new everyday.

Oh, and about the breadth requirements, I have one more question. I have 6 of the 7 required breadth requirements done so far. Again, does the last breadth requirement need to be done by the time of application, or by the spring before admission. Keep in mind please, that I would still need to complete my additional english course in the spring as well. Do you think having two classes planned in spring is pushing it too much? Especially since it is Haas...

Socalgal, you should be fine. Just make sure to finish it in spring.

Wilderr, I will be applying to Haas and I am also going to complete IGETC. What science classes did you take? As long as you complete a lab class you will complete IGETC. Assuming that is your last req.

While I think it is probably a good idea to get as much done as humanly possible, the advisor I talked to at Haas said you could have things planned without penalty, so long as it isn't one of those big 4.

thanks wilderr. thanks alot.

The lab is by far my last req, heh. Is it possible to take a lab and not a class?

I've taken Physics&NutSci (@berkeley). I could easily do another class spring semester, but I'm not sure it would count toward IGETC. Anyone know?

Yep I took an anthro lab over the internet the semester after I took the class.
