I saw the headline on Google News, clicked on it thinking "hmm, I wonder which poor university got into trouble now", and was not amused when I saw the answer. :(

Oh god dammit.

Yeah, there was an article yesterday in the LA Times about it. It is only for students who did their application online, and it doesn't seem that serious, but it still is creepy.

crap...i applied online...

o great...

Apparently, a student found the flaw and looked at a few files and then told USC about it. They said charges are very unlikely.

Rec'd the letter today. SC's answer is for everyone to rotate your free credit report requests every four months. I was trasferred to the security voice mail--it was full. Apparently many parents feel that USC should pay for the credit reports. This mom is not a happy camper with the way things are being handled so far. I feel very sorry for the poor ladies answering the phone. The first one must have used all her brain cells answering the phone calls. The second one, poor thing, must be a saint. Guess I'll send Steve a letter, I am sure I won't be the only one.

The number of records accessed is most likely less than ten (10). USC is just being cautious. They're putting out the truth, and not attempting to hide anything. I don't think it's too much to be concerned about -- although USC should work on improving security education in the engineering department :)

I asked where they got the "less than ten". They were not helpful. It would help if they would give more info so that students can decide if they want to put fraud alerts on their credit reports. I survived a mild case of ID theft and it was a big pain.

I got that security letter to. And I only sent Part 1 of the App, not Part 2 b/c I didn't want to apply anymore...

If it is indeed true that less than ten records were accessed (which the magazine that broke the news to USC confirmed from the source), then out of 270,000 records, there's a less than 0.00004 chance that you were affected.

It's sad that so many parents are misdirecting their anger; the University should be commended for being so forthcoming and open, notifying all 270,000 possilby affected people and taking all this flak when at most 10 are affected.

Shame on those parents. Find a legitimate outlet for stress or take some chill pills.

^^ agreed.

i heard from the news that USC isn't sure how many profiles/informations were revealed or affected by it...gosh..I'm so worried!

I got the letter very recently and decided to come to the USC forum on CC to see if anyone else knew about what was going on. The thing is, I never even applied to USC officially. I was only interested in applying and just STARTED the online app without submitting it. That was in December! It would suck if that was my info. I think only people who have a chance of being the ones revealed get the letter. I hope this is no big deal because now I regret even showing interest in USC, well sort of.
