Had a really bad junior year. What will colleges think when they see my transcript?

I’m an IB senior that had a really rough junior year, that brought my cum GPA down from a 3.9 to a 3.6. I feel horrible, and want to go back in time to fix this, but I know I just can’t.

Considering that this overall GPA isn’t even bad, it is unfortunate for me to say that I got a D in IB World Literature HL and a C in IB History HL in my second semester. Originally, I had gotten B’s in both classes my first semester, but I really dropped the ball after that. My overall GPA has dropped significantly in a downwards trend my whole high school career… it makes me feel hopeless. What should I do? I’m taking 7 IB classes and Symphony Orchestra as an elective, and I’ve started off the year with straight A’s, as I learned I may have ADD according to my primary care physician (I don’t know why, but it gives me motivation to work harder than I did before). How will colleges judge my application?

I feel as if I doomed myself with these stats. My top choices before junior year were UMichigan, NYU, UCLA, BU, UIUC and UIC (safeties). But currently, I think I’m WAY below their standards.

I’m not even looking to major in something too academic. I want to do something that dwells in music (sound engineering, music production, etc.). Honestly, my dream job is to be a music producer, or even going further, a composer for films. What do you think I should do?

Are the second grades you’re showing only for the second semester and not for the whole year? If so, I’d ask your counselor what grades colleges see on your transcript. It might be they only see the whole year grade, which would mean they’d only see one or two C’s and no D’s. That would at least make you feel a little better.

I think the 1230 SAT score is also a limiting factor. You could take the early December test and try for a 1300. I’d also suggest not applying anywhere really selective early, so there’d be time to send scores in and show your first semester grades.

On the other hand, music seems like a big strength throughout your record. So I’d focus on schools that emphasize that. Maybe get in touch with some people at music departments you’re interested in to focus your application and get on their radar.

It’s true: competitive schools where 3.9 GPAs and 1450 scores are common will be tough. It’s possible one (even somewhere like NYU) might be impressed enough with other aspects to get past some things. It’s possible that might not happen, too, so you definitely need some less selective (possibly smaller) schools as well. I’d also worry about cost, as you’re not likely to get into schools with fantastic financial aid, and merit aid may be hard to get. But I still think you have a lot of possibilities that two fairly bad and three not so great grades won’t prevent.

The second grades indicate the second semester. Also, I’m planning on taking the December test and have been studying to benchmark 1300-1330, and idealizing 1370-1400 as a reach.
