So I messed up pretty bad my first year of college. Classes which SHOULD have been As, I neglected and got Bs (and evens Cs) in. And I mean classes that are SUPER easy. I'm really upset with myself. It's like I'm shooting myself in the foot.

It's a 3.3-ish this first year. I mean first quarter I get a 3.6 and am upset with myself for not getting a 4.0. And my rationale for the next term is not 'try harder', instead I tell myself 'Hey you got a 3.6 with minimal work, why don't you work even less and hope for a better grade".

I'm actually afraid that I will not be able to change my ways. It's a legitimate worry. I'm pretty freaked out right now.

Any improvement/success stories out there? Why was your first year/term/half so bad and how were you able to improve yourself, if at all.

i never got lower than a b my entire first year and i still ended with only a 3.4; second year i just decided to put my work in and got a 3.9 average to boost my gpa to 3.7.

if you decide to take things seriously, your grades will improve.

Wow, a 3.3? That’s absolutely terrible. You must’ve had one REALLY messed up year. Did your parents get killed by your best friend? Did your hands get cut off by a chainsaw, making it difficult to write? How do you screw up so badly to get a B+ AVERAGE??? That’s insane!!!

Plural Cs is kind of an exaggeration. Maybe 1 C. And the term GPA is actually a bit worse than I expected. 3.0.

It actually makes me pretty good to hear about your 3.9 Brian. But that’s what bothers me. I have to get 3.9-4.0s to rectify this mistake. Otherwise I’m gonna fall out of the 25%tile.

And yeah, I have an idea of what I’m shooting for and relative to those goals this is pretty bad. What’s up with you guys?

Ignore the haters. I imagine their GPA validates their existence. Hopefully their transcript will allow them to overcome their lack of empathy and social skills.

Anyways, down to brass tacks, obviously this is not an ideal situation but it is hardly insurmountable. Are we talking a single term with a 3.0? It will pull down your average, but if you kill it the next three years you’ll be fine. You might want to consider retaking the class you got a C in. Input the numbers in a GPA calculator, if you got a C in a 5 unit class, you need 25 units of A’s (five-six solid classes) just to get an A- average with the C thrown in.

I had a term with a 3.4 (sophomore year) and an entire year with just a 3.5. At the end of three years worth of grades I have a 3.71. If I kill it the next year I’ll end my college transcript with 4 consecutive terms of 4.0 and finish close to a 3.8. Start racking up 4.0 terms and everything will sort itself out.

If you’re really set on law school stay out of sciences/engineering courses. There’s not a lot of room to manuever when you’re up against pre-med gunners/tech types. Humanities are easy A’s if you write well. A lot of lit classes come down to seminar participation and a good term paper. Speak up in class and put real work into your papers and you’ll do well.
