haha here's another one. lil help plz?

aight you've probably seen it before, but i wanna know what my chances at acceptance are for uc berkeley. even if ur tired of seeing these types of topics, help me out?

aight here it is

asian male (haha i wish i was native american).
out of state (montgomery country, maryland)

GPA: 3.95/4.00
weighted gpa: 4.7

SAT: 2250 (750 math, 720 verbal, 780 writing)

yeh im gonna retake this **** and try to go for the 800 math. i probably made some stupid mistakes. verball... im just bad at it, so *** that. haha

umm lets see... im in the international baccalureate program (IB)
im lookin to be an engineering major (dunno which yet) but yeh im taking the appropriate classes.
im a junior so im taking multivar calc, physics, chem

uuhh... i started my own club at school. martial arts club
we're gonna perform for a show next year. (wish me luck. still tricking and training. my butterfly twist is still off... u probably have no idea what im talking about..haha)

umm im in some clubs. Musings literary magazine, asian club (har har), fellowship of christian athletes, Mu Alpha Theta (tutoring math program thing) haha i should raelly attend some meetings though... haha.. kinda been busy

i use to play piano for a couple years. im decent. more of a lil hobby thing now.

yeh i been doing martial arts for a long time. tae kwon do mostly. i went out for a cuople tournaments (NASKA circuit) sparring and forms. placed 2nd and 3rd some years.

ive had a job as a tutor on numerous occasions. i use to work at my tae kwon do studio teaching lil kids :).

well thats it. my chances? you tell me.
thx for reading this shlt. would really like ur opinion as to where i stand

is that your UC gpa? you must recalculate if thats the one from high school

huh ? my UC gpa?

nah im a junior in high school...

wat do u mean by UC gpa?

i meant my chances for undergraduate admission.

umm... did i post in the wrong place?

engineering is really selective, especially out of state. good luck

Super selective, but your GPA is very high and you have as good a shot as anyone.

UC gpa is your high school GPA in terms of UC-approved classes, you can find the list on their website. I'm responding to this post because you sound an awful lot like someone I know. At any rate, you should get accepted as an out-of-stater. Like most other students with good things going for them (standardized test scores, activities, etc), the only way you won't make it is if they find something to knock your character. Put it this way, you're in already, but any opening for them to question your quality/character is an opportunity for them to reject. What you should do is make sure everything in your app is air-tight, and don't, I repeat, don't even show a shred of arrogance (many students delude themselves into thinking that retaking SAT's to get from close-to-perfect to perfect scores are just trying to be "better," when in actuality it's a matter of pride. Lay off the tests, they're fine. In fact, I'll venture to say that most students who get into the very best schools with top top test scores are not there because they're 'geniuses' (blah), it's because they didn't screw up their application. Say, a student with good grades (not the best) and gets 1600 on SAT's is automatic into Harvard, but there is a possibility of rejection simply due to descrepancies. At this point, you don't have to list reasons why should be accepted, rather, the schools (Harvard, in this case) are trying to find reasons against you. It's a powerful hand, and you hold the cards because, simply put, Numbers speak loudly.) Show some humility, show some insight, and you're a lock. Best of luck!

TTG, '09

i don't think he would show any bit of arrogance by retaking his sat's.
i'm an out of stater who got into engineering with sat's similar to yours (higher on math and verbal, lower on writing as the SATII). it's my opinion that berkeley puts a significant amount of weight on extracurriculars, so if you show that you worked hard on yours, it should be fine (mine were tennis and clarinet). My essays were pretty good, nothing too great, so put some time and effort into them, but don't go overboard. Most importantly, have some fun senior year and don't stress too much with the whole college thing. it'll all work out in the end.

as good a shot as anyone is still a pretty low shot.

haha o man im scared.
im getting mixed replies. low chance, high chance.
truthfully i came to this forum to ease my anxiety but now that i realize it, its making me even more nervous hahaha

aight so anyone else have an opinion?

is berkeley your first choice?

yeh berkeley or stanford. both have great engineering programs

"Say, a student with good grades (not the best) and gets 1600 on SAT's is automatic into Harvard, but there is a possibility of rejection simply due to descrepancies."

Since when was a 1600 auto for Harvard?

warning number 1: don't cuss on the application (it should be obvious)
warning number 2: DON'T mention race beyond that little check box that you have to tick...don't dwell on it
warning number 3: don't list ECs that you don't LOVE...if you play piano just for kicks, you might not want to list that as an EC, because doing so causes them to automatically compare you with the virtuosos who invariably apply to such colleges

final warning: RELAX. Don't go nuts over it. Most of what we say are personal opinions, and they have little bearing over what actually happens to you.

""Say, a student with good grades (not the best) and gets 1600 on SAT's is automatic into Harvard, but there is a possibility of rejection simply due to descrepancies."

Since when was a 1600 auto for Harvard?"

Read the next few lines of my comment, reproduced below. It's not scientific or first hand information, but I think it's a fair and reasonable assumption.

The thing is, I didn't have discrepancies...1600 SAT I + 2400 "SAT II set" + AP + USACO + AIME + college courses = waitlist...

dude, dont retake the sat. your score is awesome and you'll get into any uc with that score. You'll also be really competitive for stanford. Plus when you get to that level, scores really don't matter that much.

what has an 'h' in it
don't spell yeah 'yeh'
dont say 'aight'
dont say 'umm' and 'uhh' so much
dont curse, even if its **** censored

and your chances will improve 10 fold
