Last year, I was ranked 18th internationally in....competitive pokemon. During the summer, I spent some of my free time constructing a pokemon team meant for competitive play. It was actually really good, and I managed to reach 18th.

I'm not very sure whether to put this down...competitive pokemon is a competitive game and can require a great deal of skill/practice to be good at, sort of like a game like chess. At the same time...it is pokemon.

It’s pretty interesting in my opinion. It IS an international distinction, and if you make someone on the committee laugh, well that can only work in your favor.

Second, admissions are so capricious that an adcom may accept you just for being the only applicant that makes him laugh. Think about it: adcoms read hundreds of applications throughout the season, and usually have to do it for hours on end. They need a laugh!

Definitely put it down. It can’t hurt, and hopefully they’ll recognize that it really is impressive, silly though it sounds.
Also I second the request about who was on your team, though since I haven’t played fourth-gen games I probably won’t recognize them anyway. XD

add that to your application! If i were 18th ranking international Pokemon player i would definitely put that in my app or write about it for my essay. Its coming that will really make you stand out and will work in favor for you.

I am an asian guy
I play violin (very good at it…)
I am on the math team
I am on the physics team
I do not play chess
I got 790 on math, 750 on reading in SAT
I took SAT II math, physics, and USH, and did well on all 3
I hang with other asians and nerds

I am also however
on the tennis team, and reached the quarterfinals in the state tournament
indoor track
rugby club
class vice president
NHS treasurer
popular at school (and get the perks )
interested in politics and social studies
started an SAT prep program
I hang with jocks

I am extroverted and demand a fairly large presence (you can call it confidence or arrogance…either way, I’m not an introverted bookworm).

I like think that I balance the stereotypical asian side of me with other activities.

As to how I got into competitive pokemon…I was playing my game boy for nostalgia’s sake one day, found out there was competitive pokemon, tried it out, sucked, and then set out to improve myself a bit.

lmao its sad but i actually know this stuff. Dude u came in 18th in worlds? gratz thats good! and pokemon ownz did u go through grinders or did u win states/regoinals or cities? cause if u did then u should add that to ur app too

I don’t see how things like this can hurt your chances of admission, the worst that I think it would do is just be looked over, other than that it could be helpful.

don’t try to give the adcoms what you think they want. a previous poster said to hide this activity because it could portray you as a nerd. but that’d be counterintuitive. you’d be missing out on a chance to both impress and crack up whoever reads your app.

I also just started playing Pokemon. I’m also Asian, and its so cool that you achieved that position! Yes I know this thread is kinda old, but I just feel like I have to post something here. And I didn’t know that you could win scholarships from Pokemon! I just found out while reading an article on the winners of Worlds 2011! Anyways, thanks for sharing this!
