Haha, yes, I am seriously asking this.

I am a budding composer. I wanted to send a school I was deferred to a rap (the lyrics, anyways) about why I should go to the school/what I like about the school. This would accompany a few serious pieces. Yes/no?

I’d say yes – if it’s part of a portfolio of with serious pieces. Would show range (and hopefully a sense of humor.)

But I’m not an expert in the musical field, and would defer to the advice of those who are. Good luck!

If you’re applying for some kind of performing program, then I would consider it. Browse their site, see what they have to say about supplemental materials, etc.

If you’re not in any kind of music/theater/performing major…I don’t think it would be the best idea

I’m not, but I have indicated that I am very musically inclined/interested in the Music Department at a later date. The school is big (more than 40,000 applicants this year). I feel that it will make a difference if I stick my neck out a little.

It would certainly be interesting. If I were you, I would try to use proper grammar, and not slang. I don’t think the admission officers would be very impressed by slang.

But then it would be more poem-esque.

They also wouldn’t be very impressed by bad rap. Nobody uses proper grammar in rap.

Nor do many poets use proper grammar. Grammar is for prose.

Depends on the school, too. UChicago? Definitely. Quirky LAC? Yup. Somewhere else? idk…

UMichigan. I think a rap would amuse it. And true dat, RedSeven yo. Obviously the language would be within the average persons understanding from a blank page xD. But I think some slang is in order.

Instead of just sending lyrics, you might want to consider recording it (nothing fancy, maybe just on garageband) and sending them the tape. Let them listen to it, cuz rap needs its flow, and you can be lyrically gifted, but if there is no flow, there’s no point to writing the rap. Just write a simple background, and let the beat run. In between every 16 or so bars just throw in a little drum break, maybe just some cool snare 16th or 32nd notes to keep the admins interested. Also, you can use slang, but I wouldn’t be profane. Good Luck!

I might! My step dad is a professional musician. The backtrack wouldn’t be too hard to come up with. It’d be hard to keep from laughing when I do it … but I might consider that.

Sounds fine to me so long as its tasteful.

Send the recording, that will at least get their attention.
