I called to check if my FAFSA was received today.

I was put on hold at first.

About ten minutes later, a lady comes back and asks, "Are you being helped?"

When she said that, I heard "Are you being held?"

So I said, "Yes."

And I was put on hold again.

This repeated one more time. I wondered why she kept asking me the same question, and I realized that she actually asked if I were being "helped."

So I quickly stuttered, "Wait! Wait!" to catch her, but I missed her and the pleasant melody of the hold button started playing.

I finally got to talk to the person on my third attempt and took care of everything.

Using English as a second language can lead to a bizarre problem like this.

Sometimes, it's just tough to hear every single word.

By the way, who works in the financial aid office at Notre Dame? Angels?

They're so nice!
