Hall of Shame

No I think he is talking about the town of Amherst. The young ladies at UMass-Amherst are quite attractive

no, he/she is talking about Amherst college - in Amherst, yes, but it's a small liberal arts college just like williams - I'd apply there, but out of moral, I can't apply to the arch-nemesis/rival of all rivals of Williams... and I have enough schools.

But amherst is a cool place - my friend got in ED and i was hoping that we could have a friendly brawl if i got in, but alas, we cannot.

you'll get into Dartmouth Reyk...... Make sure and talk witht he prof, and see if he knows people in the admissions office

there might have just been some sort of fatal flaw in your application that turned your (probable) deferral into a rejection. This could be something specific to williams, like one of your teachers NOT rating you as a good fit to the college, bad connection with your school, etc.

Hopefully it is not something bigger, that will be sent to all of your schools (i.e. just bad overall teacher rec, mixed up transcripts, or any other sort of flaw that can happen) I would recommend having your GC call and investigate, but that seems like somehting that you should have done earlier than right now.

oh come on, in college admissions, rivalry is overrated...of course, i didn't apply to amherst because i EDd to williams (which is tons better, i can't help thinking, the more so since they admitted me) but i'm just saying...that a lot of people apply to both colleges. although, in all fairness, i'm talking about mostly international students who don't know enough to have a decided preference (bascially, who don't know how superior williams is:)

Those that with high GPA and SAT scores that got rejected or deferred should pay close attention to their essays and personal statements. Elite Liberal Arts Schools like Williams requires students to be able to think, not just score highly on exams. Your entire application has to show that you are a unique, yet humble individual with intellectual curiosity. I also would suggest sending any additional materials (art work, recording, graded essays, etc.) that will demonstrate your individuality to the admissions board.

Rey; You're getting some great advice here! These are great posters who've "been there and done that."
I'd advise that you view the Williams rejection as a catharsis event and move on.
When I saw your stats your GPA's stood out because they were below 3.9.
Your EC's are very good, but not superstar status.
You are an excellent student, great person and will be admitted to 95% of the colleges in the USA. Do not be discouraged by denial to Williams.
It's like sending an application to and being rejected by Hmmm...
Jessica Simpson.... Does rejection by her mean you'll never go out with another woman? Hell No....!
You have lots of great colleges you are qualified for.

So, you didn't have a "hook" that got you help from a Williams coach. Most sports at Williams have a couple of tips, football has many more, but it's sport specific.
If you can show excellence in a specific area, you'll get the assistance you need. Contact the coaches, send videos, visit the campuses.
It's a sales process. You're selling your skills and talents to them, and they're selling their college to you.
It can be athletics, debate, theater, language, leadership, etc. But, focus on one thing, and only one thing. The soccer coach doesn't care if you were 2nd team all state in baseball, etc.

Also, make sure you visit as many colleges as possible, and don't reject any due to hearsay or their status on USNews and WR. Find your best fit.
Forget Williams. With the advice from CC you can now apply with confidence to Harvard and Dartmouth! And a few safety's, too.
Good luck!

creon's right, you might want to take a closer look at your essay...i know that williams (and other colleges of similar calibre) rank it as one of the most important factors in admissions decisions...when i went for my info sessions, the speakers kept on emphasising how crucial it is that you have an essay that's not just well-written, but also personal...that says something definite about who you are, and isn't one of those stereotypes; and even if you pick a stereotyped topic, (let's face it, with thousands of college applicants every year, it's almost impossible not to) it should be written in a way that highlights your response as unique, and REAL, setting you apart from the hundreds of others who probably wrote about similar things; someone at the williams admissions office said to me, that you should send your essay to the person who knows you best, and if that person reads the essay and says, "that's you, i could almost see you standing in front of me when i was reading it", then you'll know you've got the essay that can get you in. i know the advice for williams is a little late, but i'm willing to bet admissions officers at other colleges like dartmouth and brown would say the same thing.
also, i think you should definitely have your GC call and talk to them...if there was something missing, or some flaw in your application that you didn't notice, you want to know about it, and be able to fix it before you apply to other colleges...one of which, i'm sure, will admit a great candidate like you!

grrrrr...Fida..how could u suggest Amherst??..where's ur Eph spirit??...u will be drowned in lake Chargooggagoggmanchuaggagoggchaubunagungamaug (that lake near Williams with the longest name)...be afraid..be very afraid..muahahahaha

ok??... is that true, noxious?

yeahh!!!..i read about it in the Williams viewbook.
you can also check this link -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg

It's in the Williams viewbook? It's not really near Williamstown -closer to Boston.

oh come off it noxious...you spent the whole of junior year bragging about princeton...you only started CONSIDERING williams a month before the ED deadline, and that too, mostly because princeton has three annoying essays (that's what his gf told me)

oh..poor Fida..i pity you girl..such viciousness..not good..and very un Eph-ish. ..hmm.seems like u like digging up info (not neccessarily correct info) about ppl you hardly know and hardly ever talked to..

anyways..lets not fight..im sure we have better things to do..and..btw..my post was a joke....sense of humour..a lost trait indeed nowadays it seems....

well, fida i don't think that time determines your dedication for a particular thing- in this case the particular thing is Williams. time does not end up with being with the measure of everything. i think it'd be better if we discuss this next fall, hah? i also don't appreciate your gossiping about the people in such manner. i don't think that you know noxious enough. if you knew, then u would not be writing such things. if you knew him enough, then you would be telling these into his face, not on a forum, i guess. am i wrong???? people go first either with the appearance or with the name and have the right to change their minds. you cannot humiliate them just because they have changed their minds. if you're an int'l and don't have the opportunity to visit the schools in the U.S., then it's harder for you to decide, so it's natural for one to go with the name.

by the way, i also can't believe that you suggested Amherst. you accuse other people of not being a true Eph but you can suggest reyk to go for Amherst. I just can't believe you!!!

quote

[/quote]

my, my, what a horrible girlfriend! appalled

hmm.

a few things i want to make clear:

a) it is wrong to misquote people.

b) it is wrong to make up things said by others.

c) it is wrong to sound vicious on CC; or if i were to have my way, it is wrong to be vicious at all. i've been wandering around this place for a while and let me tell you that the almost nasty, completely misquoting, almost jealous and obviously defensive sounding people make up a very, very small minority here. most people here have a good sense of humour and do NOT make personal attacks. read, that's why the site is named college CONFIDENTIAL. but since you did start the topic, let's try to close it down: noxiousnirvana's college essay was great - and as someone who's known him beyond the 2 minute encounter someone else has had with him, i can say that he chose williams not because of the fewer number of essays he had to write but because of plenty of other reasons. and i wouldn't even have mentioned this here unless you brought up me (the horrible gf) into the picture.

d) this isn't a page three kinda site. it's a site about colleges and i think i speak for almost all of us when i say we can be spared the gossip.

jrpar:

The lake is mentioned in pg 33 of the recent viewbook. I love the name:D I promised myself to try to memorise the name before i go to Williams!! Would be quite a challenge..hehe

geez...i didn't mean it THAT personally guys, relax...it's true that i don't know noxious very well, but i've known his gf for awhile, and i remember we had quite a laugh because i said that i thought for sure he was a shoe-in for princeton, and she replied that he was put off by the annoying essays (as a JOKE)...really, that's why i mentioned the thing about the essays - does that sound, to anyone, like a totally serious reason for changing a college decision?...and, in all fairness, i was kind of put off by the princeton app myself - so i would not (and do not) hold that against anyone else...neverthless, i apologise if you were seriously offended noxious...and to anyone else who reacted negatively
and athene...reyk is a highly qualified applicant who williams rejected...now i can't possibly know the extent of his dedication/preference for williams, but it just makes sense to me that he would now look at other options, even if they're second-best to williams
