Halogen Lamps

If I bring one, will I get in alot of trouble? I really like them, as they are really efficient.

Thanks

Just wondering: Why are they banned in the dorms?

can’t imagine anyone would even bother to check…

i’d assume it can start a fire or something, much like the lava lamps can explode.

So has anyoen succesffuly brought and used them in the resident halls?

Probably, people break rules all the time. But if an RA spots them s/he might just throw it away (I don’t see them arresting you). Basically it’s a safety issue since they can explode from a touch. Obviously if a fire starts in the dorms Berkeley will be effed up. I, personally, am too paranoid to bring a halogen lamp because of that 1% it might cause a fire. It’s your choice. If you bring it, it’ll probably be fine, but any trouble it causes is on you.

I’ve had a halogen lamp fall off a desk and melt a patch of carpet in my room at home. Fortunately I was there when it happened and caught it before a fire broke out. It’s not worth the risk. Look for a multi-band desk lamp. It produces a ‘natural’ light similar to daylight and it isn’t a fire hazard.

yeahh halogen lamps tend to heat up a lot, and quickly. why the heck would you want to bring one to a dorm?

and i don’t see how they’re really efficient. try fluorescent or LED lights.

They are efficient because they are alot cheaper, just as bright or brighter, and last longer in my opinion.

i gota brand new fluorescent desk lamp for $10 at Walmart last year and I didn;t even change the bulb once the entire year.

it’s clearly not very efficient if it’s heating up so much. so much heat implies energy loss.

besides, fluorescent lamps are WAY more energy efficient than any incandescent bulb.
