Although you’ve got the test scores and grades to get in, you’ve left off what is perhaps the most important thing to get into Hamilton (or any selective SLAC) - What courses were available and what did you take? Plus, how do you compare to other students at your school. What do they take and how do you stack up against them? Did you interview (on-campus or alumni)? - Hamilton would really like to talk to you before they let you in.

If you go to a Hamilton info session, the first thing they tell you is it’s all about curriculum, curriculum, curriculum. That is what distinguishes who gets in and who doesn’t.

MrMom62:thx for ur help! But I’m from China, which means I cannot take AP or IB courses or any other advanced courses… Will this background seems not so good to get in??
I’ve been to a college fair and met the admission office who take charge of international students… And I’ll apply for an online interview… Thx for ur help!

You can’t take what’s not offered, so I’m sure Hamilton will take that into consideration. I’m not sure what they look for in an international student, but I think you’ve got a good shot, given what you’ve written. Definitely do the online interview - since Hamilton is a very writing intense college, I’m sure they’re going to make sure your English is strong enough to handle the curriculum.

Good luck!

Mrmom62: really thanks for ur help and advices!!! And I really wanna ask about the Greek group in Hamilton… Since in china, there aren’t these kinds of organizations that probably will desperate students into different groups… Will these Greek groups and sorority groups effect student life too much? Like have too many parties or alcohol or impede expansion of social network??
Thx again!

You list “expected” scores, not actual scores. Hamilton is big on writing so your mastery of the English language will be critical.

nervedoctor: yes… U r right… I don’t know what’s the expectation about international students in our English skills… Truly, a high TOEFL score means nothing but testing skills… I hope my SAT will go well and my essays can show my English ability…
Do u know how to make the WHY ESSAY unique?

Be specific. Mention aspects of Hamilton College that resonate for you, especially features that are not present at other schools. Mention name of buildings and /or faculty there if appropriate to your essay.

I’m wondering why you guys would target Hamilton and not similar schools such as Vassar and Brown. What are your reasons?

In D’s case, it was a matter of Vassar and Brown never looking like a fit on paper. Both have a reputation of being very activist campuses, and D did not want schools with in-your-face politics, which is why she wasn’t interested in Wesleyan either. Hamilton just seems a little more laid back about that and a little more balanced.

Brown was probably a reach as well given D’s test scores and our HS Naviance scattergram, though it might have been possible. We never even bothered to visit Brown or Vassar, given that we didn’t have time to see everything and we targeted schools that seemed a better match. Once you’ve got 10 solid possibilities, and some real solid top picks, how many more schools do you need?

Hamilton also specifically emphasizes writing in all its classes, and that held a particular attraction for D, who is an excellent writer, even though she wants to go into medicine. It’s not her top pick, but might become that if ED1 fails.

I never consider Brown because my best friend will apply there.
I met with the admission officer of both Vassar and Hamilton on a college fair… But Vassar’s AO really made people uncomfortable…
When I asked whether the dining hall in Vassar is great, and she answered that “If you wanna have a great food supply, you shouldn’t even apply US colleges.”
I think her answer is really harsh…so I don’t like Vassar anymore…
And I think Hamilton’s math is better than Vassar… Its government major is also really great… Especially the Washington D.C. Program…

Yes, Vassar admission officers are horrible. They are just incredibly rude.

Yeah I never considered Brown because I think its a bit out of my reach. I am applying to Vassar regular if I don’t get into Hamilton. Hamilton is my first choice for a lot of reasons. They have a really good math program, I liked the sense of community there, and I also liked the open curriculum because I want to double major.

What are majors you guys wanna study?
I prefer double major in government and mathematics…

DS is applying RD for Chemistry! He loves the campus, the open curriculum, the outdoorsy activities, and the sense of community. Good luck to all applicants:)

I’m thinking about applying RD to a biology major. Does anyone have information about Hamilton’s biology program?

Thrombo, I believe the sciences are strong at Hamilton.
