ED2 Decisions come out tonight - starting this thread for those who applied.
Hi! I’m an international student from Iran and I got in
Congratulations! My D did not get in unfortunately. Stats were 3.87 GPA (weighted, IB) and 32 ACT composite.
Thanks!
I’m sorry to hear that. I’m sure she’ll get into a great college
Thanks so much - congrats again. I"m sure she will be happy wherever she goes. Have fun when you arrive at Hamilton!
@Collegemom2016 , my D is a sophomore from an IB school with a similar GPA and she is very interested in Hamilton down the road. Any thoughts on why your D didn’t get in? We will be visiting the school in three weeks.
So, to be honest with you, I was surprised as well. They sent us a large packet of information priority mail and totally unsolicited by us. I knew of Hamilton College and had not considered it for D because I believed it was a reach and not likely. When we received the packet I called the Admissions office and spoke to assistant admissions officer. I ran the stats and ECs past him and he assured me that she was a good fit and they “accepted GPAs below that” . Had he even provided a subtle hint like “well, that GPA is a little low for our admits” I would have gotten the message and not bothered. Instead I heard a whole lot of “she sounds like a great fit, IB is very impressive, its the best preparation for a liberal arts college etc. So we drove up in the dead of winter on a 10 hour road trip, it was 9 degrees when we toured the campus, and she changed her application from regular decision (because we only had a few days to get the app submitted” to ED. I figured the worst case scenario was either a deferral or wait list. Instead they denied her outright which really annoyed me and of course greatly disappointed her because it is a beautiful school and she loved it, especially since it has a very strong history dept. I have been very astute in not getting sucked in to these sorts of PR campaigns, but they got us. I have no idea why she was not accepted except that her GPA was too low.
Stats:
3.21 uw
3.87 w
IB candidate
Good ECs and internship
College credit in history course from top university
internship
31 ACT, 32 (composite) 10 on the writing section
I highly recommend Lynn O’Shaughnessy’s book the College Solution. It was incredibly helpful and I have for the most part avoided this sort of experience thanks to her advice.
Good luck - feel free to PM me.
Thank you @CollegeMom2016. I will bear that in mind. IB Schools are quite rigorous and high GPA’s aren’t as easy to come by. Frankly I’m surprised that her high ACT didn’t offset the lower GPA. It makes me think poorly of Hamilton for a PR campaign clearly meant to boost rankings by lower their acceptance rate. Of course, all the colleges do it, so I suppose it can’t be escaped. Good luck to your daughter! I’m sure that wherever she ends up will be fantastic. She clearly is prepared.
@Collegemom2016 Colleges admissions are invariably unpredictable and you cannot really expect an adcom officer to say " Your GPA is on the lower side" because then whats the purpose of an admission comittee anyway. A thousand factors are combined to make one decision. The point being your daughter will get in somewhere better and dont let yourself down based on one decision.
does anyone know if they can accept you conditionally until you get your ib final results?
@monkeyboy961 what do you mean?
@Monekyboy961 What do you mean? Can they reject you and then accept you if you get good ib final results? Can they accept you but reject you if you get bad ib results?
I’m saying do they accept students conditionally as in: " you have been conditionally accepted to xxxxx university with a minimum score of 35/45
@Monekyboy961 so basically will they accept you only if you do get a certain threshold score? No they don’t do that…
