Test optional combined with no supplemental essays is hard to resist if you’re interested in attending a SLAC.
Colby up 13% this year.

Worried about what Hamilton numbers will look like too…
Hard year in so many ways. Sigh.
D who was admitted ED 1 received an email yesterday from admissions saying they had 9400 total applications this year, a record.
At least they didn’t see the crazy 30% increase numbers. Looks like a little more than a 10% increase so while it’s still up, at least it’s manageable.
Looked like closer to 26% to me…I hope I’m wrong!? Compared to last year?
Their 2019-2020 Common Data Set shows roughly 8,300 applications received for the prior year. So it’s about a 14% increase.
I see what you’re saying. For class of 2024 they had around 7400 applications so that’s what I was looking at…
Thanks!
I’m confused. What does the 8,300 applications represent? What is the 2019-2020 Common Data Set? I’m not familiar with that.
I see the 2024 class had 7,443 applications (see link below). Isn’t this what the 9,400 applications that @Rjd777 mentioned should be compared to? So 9,400/7,443 = 26% increase.
The Common Data Sets are what every school uses to report uniform data. For 2019-2020 Hamilton reported 8,239 applications which you can clearly see on page 7. I can’t comment on the 7,400 number that you’re referencing but you would certainly expect their data to match the official numbers in the CDS.
It may be that we’re talking about a different year which would mean they had a material decrease last year.
Either way their apps are up. But not Colgate 102% up thankfully.
Well apparently the increase in applications to Hamilton is far less than the 2-3 fold increase the coach told DS, even granting some license for hyperbole.
Still, it’s a tough year everywhere. In the end DS applied to twelve schools (a practice we had previously poo-poohed) and now I’m worried twelve schools wasn’t enough.
Even though this is the CDS for 2019-2020, the admissions numbers are for those who enrolled in Fall 2019, which means the class of 2023. It is confusing and seems to explain the discrepancy in the numbers.
Copied from Hamilton’s CDS, "First-time, first-year, (freshmen) students: Provide the number of degree-seeking, first-time, firstyear [sic] students who applied, were admitted, and enrolled (full- or part-time) in Fall 2019. " (Bold added by me.)
As @gotham_mom posted there’s the discrepancy in your numbers. You’re looking at students that applied for the Fall 2019 start and we’re looking at the numbers on Hamilton’s website (which I provided in my previous post) for students that applied for the Fall 2020 start. So we are comparing the right 2 years (students applying for the Fall 2021 vs. Fall 2020) but you’re comparing 2019 to 2021.
If you want to look back at 2019 then applications went down from 2019 to 2020 and then back up again for 2021.
Students Applying for:
Fall 2019 Start: 8,339
Fall 2020 Start: 7,443
Fall 2021 Start (unsubstantiated): 9,400
Mystery solved. Thanks @gotham_mom!
As a prediction, your son will see a Bates ED2 acceptance, @CocoaTiger.
Thank you for your positive thoughts, very much appreciated. There have been some encouraging signs this week that DS has real coach support there (e.g. Bates coach pressing DS to get his mid-year grades submitted) but after the Hamilton ED experience we are afraid to get our hopes up.
Good luck good luck good luck! He sounds very qualified!
This might have yet to be resolved, in that up-topic uncertainty was expressed as to whether this applied to ED or RD applications.
D21 is accepted ED2.
Congrats!
Accepted ED II! Excited to join the Hamily
If you were accepted, I’d love to exchange social media handles via DM. If you were rejected or deferred, I wish you the best of luck! Part of me thinks I had to be rejected from another school before being accepted to Hamilton.
