Anyone else here applying ED2 to Hamilton? I can’t wait till the 12th!
Yes. My kid is. Lots of anticipation!
dancingwriter, are you a Jan app?
Nope. I’m already taking a gap year right now, so I’d much prefer entering college in the fall. What about your kid?
Jan app.
What kind of grades do you think will they be looking for? SATs? High, I know, but not sure how she falls out.
Did you have an on-campus interview?
According to last year’s accepted students stats, they seem to be looking for SAT scores between 1960 and 2210. I’m not too sure about GPAs, however. But last year, most students that reported class rank were in the top 10% of their class. http://www.hamilton.edu/admission/profile
And no, I did not have an interview on-campus or off-campus. I am an international student which makes interviewing quite difficult unfortunately.
Got it! She’s got a 2150 SAT score, and really good SAT2’s, and a 3.7 GPA. The SAT Writing score was the highest one of the three for her and H loves writing, as you prob. know. Hoping that, her openness to coming in Jan., and such will carry the day. But who knows?
A minor correction: those SAT scores are for attending/enrolled students. Good luck.
Correct. And, if I read there admission rates correctly somewhere, it looks like their admit rate is low, but so too their overall yield (# of people who accept their offer once made) is pretty low overall. Like 35%. Maybe that’s why they have two ED opportunities. But, then a lot of places do.
Seems to me that after the two ED rounds, they’d have to over admit in RD by a larger margin than say the Ivies to get the folks they want and need. Harvard has a 70%+ yield.
@merc81 Thanks for the correction. My mistake.
@merc81 Are you ED2 at Ham too?
@rollypolly3: No, I just know a little about Hamilton and thought I would chip in. Related to the accurate figures you posted, in my opinion Hamilton’s admissions yield (35%) is not notably low for its type. (You probably meant the word neutrally anyway.) In some comparisons it’s actually fairly high. NESCAC schools generally have yields of ~25% and up, and I’ve seen some good colleges outside of this group below that. But I agree with your mathematical inferences.
Your daughter seems like a great candidate. Nice that she is both good at writing and loves it. Wishing you and her luck. You too, @dancingwriter.
Btw, @rollypolly3, it would be interesting to hear why your daughter applied to start in January. It came up on another thread and it’s likely there’s continuing interest in the topic.
@merc81 because we felt it heightened her chances, to be frank. If you give folks options (flexibility about when you are willing to come), people may be able to accommodate you. JMHO.
@merc81 thanks for the info about NESCAC schools. I hadn’t realized that they had similar yields. I guess 35% is pretty normal to high it seems for this group of colleges. Are you an admissions person? You seem to know a lot.
@merc81 Can you refer me to the other thread that talks about reasons people apply to Hamilton in Jan? Would be interested to read.
Sure!: “Hamilton ED 1”
Thank you for the compliment; no, not in admissions.
The part I know about January admission is that it is offered to applicants Hamilton wants but cannot accommodate in the fall. Your daughter seems to have approached it differently by applying directly for January admission, with no fall possibility. That’s if I understand correctly?
