Hey,

I was reading somewhere that hamilton is know for having an exceptionally large number of legacy students and was wondering if anyone had stats to back that up or know of anyone who made Hamilton and is legacy, and their stats?

I have legacy at Hamilton and great grades until my 1st trimester report card of this year. My resume is approximately 8 pages long but i had to cut it down because my guidance counselor is a scorpion woman! Ive been invited to Japan and Germany with my school for performances and Model UN trips and have performed for Pope Benedict XVI. I have always wanted to go to Hamilton but i fear that due to an unbelievably hectic 1st trimester and a drop in grades i may have lowered my chances!!! Hopefully legacy rates are like 78% (joking!)

Thanks!

bumpity bump bump

i had a 93.6 avg during my junior year and a cum. avg. of 91.8...
Traveled to Japan with the band twice, Performed for Pope Benedict XVI.
Invited, and traveled, to Berlin Model United Nations conference.
Lead of 3 school dramas and musicals.
Soon to be Eagle Scout.
Chair of the Young Republicans Club.
Senior Member of Student Government
Promoted to Head Lifeguard at my job.
Father went to Hamilton.

However, my gpa dropped this first trimester to an 87.8 which in my book is TERRIBLE!
I was out of the country for two weeks, in bed for two weeks sick, and busy with my other EC's and school work and my grades suffered as you can see....

what do you think my chances are?

Oh and my interview went very well! and my dad graduated from Hamilton...

SAT- m630 cr590 w620
ACT- 27
SAT II's- not impressive AT ALL

and im very proud of my expository prose!

its being used as an example for younger students in theory of knowledge also.

astounding, but no...ive no clue legacy usually helps tho!

hmm...wish i was legacy :'(

i heard it was a pretty significant number who are accepted?

I have to say that on the surface, your ACT and SAT's are kinda on the lower side. Did you preference one over the other for admissions?

As far as legacy goes, while I have no direct information about Hamilton, from what I understand legacy might open the door a tiny bit, but I don't think it excuses you from the general admissions standards of transcript and testing.

yeah i know...but my EC's are great (didnt list everything on here), i have myriad volunteer and leadership experiences, my junior year grades were great, all of my teacher recommendations were great, but my SATs were low...

im hoping that they dont reject me based solely on a test that is simply ridiculous in the larger scale of things, hence why im interested in finding out how legacy rates effect applications.

but thanks for your input

And oh.. I have never seen a reasonable resume exceed two pages. Your counselor was having you edit because otherwise she knew it wasn't going to be read

haha i know...i ended up chopping it down to about 2 and a half but then spoke about the other significant activities ive done in my essays and such...

but the 8 pages was because someone asked me for a resume with descriptions of each activity...the whole thing in essence, just activities, was about 3.5 pages

the prior was for a scholarship thing

Went to an Admissions Workshop at the reunions last year.
The Dean answered a question about legacy admissions.
I can't remember the exact numbers right now but legacies do have a small advantage, but not huge.
If the regular admissions rate is around 28%, legacies are around 32% accepted. Something like that.
Both my parents went to Hamilton and have several college friends whose kids have been rejected.

oo ok thanks!

i figured it was somewhere around there and PLEASE don't think I'm planning on getting accepted because my dad went there, i was just curious because my first trimester grades for this year were lower than anything i had in my junior year and i hope that they didn't hurt my chances too much...

moopie, did you go/are you going to Hamilton?

Yes I did apply. I think I have a pretty good shot at it, but Hamilton is not my first choice. Hamilton alumni are notoriously loyal. That may explain why there is a high number of legacies. Family tradition, etc.
Good luck to you!
