Waitlisted. Not quite sure where I went wrong, wish I could find out xD The fact that they gave out personalized acceptance letters is serious bummer because I guess they didn’t see something special about me? I don’t know. It’s hard to feel positive about yourself in the first few hours after you are told you’re good but not good enough.
@OuchThatHurt hey, nobody really knows how the admissions process works except for the admissions officers that read your application. I got waitlisted at Tulane and Lehigh but accepted at Colgate and Hamilton, how did that happen? Couldn’t tell ya! My brother got flat rejected at Hamilton and then was the first acceptance at Lafayette. Sometimes it’s just an essay or an EC will resonate w/ the admissions person reading it, and sometimes it won’t. Don’t get down on yourself, because honestly, I bet there’s nowhere you went wrong and will get in wherever you are truly meant to go. If not, there’s always transfers and gap years and whatever else. Good luck!!!
Son accepted!!! With a very generous aid package (better than WPI, BC, and UD, not as good as Colby), definitely affordable! Will need to revisit before making any decisions.
35 ACT single sitting
1510 SAT single sitting (though I don’t think he submitted)
800 SAT subject tests Math 2 and Physics
4.0 uw/w (school weight is less than a percentage point per class, no GPA advantage to AP or Honors)
5 APs, 8 Honors (same distinction at his school)
Met with rowing coach and considered a recruit if ED, but he chose to go RD
STRONG ECs, particularly in leadership, ethics, and mentoring
Three-sport, four season athlete (rows year-round, so doubles sports three seasons out of the year)
US Presidential Scholar candidate
NMF
URM
GREAT letters (I’m assuming, though he chose to waive FERPA - he is highly regarded among both peers and faculty)
Accepted: Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Boston College, University of Delaware, Colby College
Deferred EA, then rejected: MIT
Waiting on: Tufts, Princeton, Yale (all long shots)
@OuchThatHurt I know it’s easier said than done, but don’t think of it as them rejecting you or not thinking you were special. It usually boils down to fit. Colleges don’t reject students they simply cannot offer admissions to everyone who applies. It’s so hard - my son was crestfallen when he didn’t get into MIT, and he found out during our vacation! You just have to shake it off and focus on the Yeses Again, I know it’s way easier said than done. But otherwise, you’ll drive yourself down with self-doubt! Be proud of your accomplishments and I’m sure the right colleges will say YES
Honestly, you should not feel bad at all. This whole process is so random. I got in at Hamilton but waitlisted at four other less competitive schools. This is definitely not a reflection upon you or any of your accomplishments. I hope you get in!

@freekong12 Congratulations! D will also be attending, it’s a great school.
Does anyone think that is mighty fast for Hamilton to go to the waitlist? I expected the waitlists to move mid-May. Wonder if their yield was less than expected? Might have been impacted by the freezing rainy weather on Accepted Students day. Although, far better to go to the waitlist than cram too many kids into dorms as some schools seem to do!
@4junior. There have been reports on other threads about wl moving already and even before May 1. Some schools I have seen mentioned for wl movement have been Swat, Bates, Duke, Rice.
@wisteria100 Wow, that’s interesting. I guess many schools are struggling with this new environment of increased applicants. Or is this normal and I am just a newbie?
It’s pretty normal for their to be activity immediately after May 1 as that’s the date when all accepted candidates have to make their decision, and so at that point, they know their shortfall. Immediately after that, they can start offering people on the waitlist. They don’t offer everyone immediately, but offer the number of spaces that they need and keep offering until they fill their desired class size.
Typically when you are offered admission from a wait list you have to decide within a day. I am guessing they want to have their shot at the best qualified applicants before they get a wait list offer elsewhere and commit.
@akin67 Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think that’s how most waitlists work…Hamilton doesn’t rank their waitlist so me getting in off the waitlist had nothing to do with my qualifications. That being said, I think that admittance off the waitlist is based on yield in terms of a person’s background. For example, if a college wanted to have 65 percent of their student body be white students and only 61 percent of their student body was white, they might go to their waitlists and accept only white people (just using white people as a generalization; this assumption can be for any race/religion/location).
