Hamilton Testing requirment

In 2014

829 out of 2590 were accepted with SAT scores— 32% accepted
362 out of 1241 were accepted with ACT scores — 29% accepted
145 out of 1181 were accepted with 3 test scores — 12.2% accepted

Why is it that it seems harder to get in by sending in three standardized test scores (SAT II, AP, IB, etc) than sending SAT or ACT scores? The acceptance rate was literally less than half of the ACT acceptance rate.

Should I seriously consider sending 3 test scores or does this statistic make it a huge gamble? Why do you think less people were accepted by using the 3 test scores as opposed to the other testing methods?

While I’m generally for statistics, in this case they may tell you less than they appear to. Weaker applicants may be overrepresented in the 3-test option, and even their “3-tests” may not be that strong. If you feel you can fairly assess yourself as being a strong applicant, and you have good supporting scores to submit, you should not be deterred by the seemingly bleak acceptance rate for 3-score applicants. Nonetheless, I’d say it’s been astute of you to have laid out the figures – and of course they could mean something for you. It’s just hard to say exactly what.

That said, I think a fair interpretation is that you should lean towards submitting your SAT/ACT scores as long as they reflect at least fairly well on you. They do not have to be stellar for this to be the case.
