Hamilton v. Large(er) University in the South

Hi all,

I have been accepted to both Emory University in Atlanta and Hamilton. I have visited both campuses, spoken to students at both, and although they are completely different schools, I am having a very difficult time deciding where to enroll.

I'm from Cambridge, MA, and so I feel like I "know" Hamilton more, in that I know many people there who have come from my school, and other private schools in the Boston area. In addition (and while prestige doesn't matter), it seems as if Hamilton is more well know in MA. Also, the crew coaches at Hamilton have been courting me fairly heavily and Emory doesn't have a Varsity Rowing program.

On the other hand, Emory is a large research university where the campus seems more diverse, and the educational opportunities are equally impressive.

I should note that I while I don't consider myself super artsy or liberal (and dare I say I may be considered a typical New England "WASP"), I am gay. I have heard that Hamilton had issues in the past few years with homophobic moments.

Can anyone help me make my choice by drawing up some pro's and con's (or refuting mine)?

Matt

Do you know what you want to major in? Is your financial aid package similar? Does the size of the town matter to you?

Hmmm, not sure either of these schools are very “gay friendly”. if this is a concern, you might want to seek out someone in a student LGBT group (assuming both schools have some kind of student group) and ask their candid opinion RE their experience? D is at Hamilton and haven’t heard her mention either way if there is tolerance or intolerance for gay students. She has gay friends from home, so is not an issue for her, but just not sure that Hamilton has a particularly large gay population.
