i've recently been very interested in Hamilton college....and i have some questions about this college~~could anybody help me a little bit?
1. i love liberal art subjects, especially writing, history, social science...am i looking at the right one? is Hamilton good in those fields?
2. extremely outgoing personality, i love social activities a lot and i love being close to everyone.
3. i hate competitive atmosphere, i love a place where people are friendly, laid-back and care about each other...is this a good choice??
if am not looking at the right college, could u plz give some more suggestions. any other schools would satisfy my need??
by the way, am looking for a school to ED, am an international student who needs generous financial aid....
come on~~i wanna hear your ideas.
thank u all~~good luck to all

1.) yes, hamilton is good at all of these subjects, especially writing
2.) if you love socializing, I think you will like Hamilton. Since it's a small college, you will get to know a group of people really well if you make the effort.
3.) I can't comment on this as I'm not a student there.
Hamilton looks like it would fit most of your requirements, but most liberal arts colleges would meet them, as they are focused on undergraduate education.

Esti -- Hamilton is indeed strong in the areas you inquired about. I am most familiar with the History program, which is quite good. I think you'd find most students friendly and far more interested in helping one another out than in stabbing them in the back. I get this information from a recent Hamilton graduate.

You are aware that Hamilton is located in a very small Upstate NY village and that the winters are fairly fierce and lengthy?

thanx hawkphonix....it's so kind of u to reply this thread~~anyway, u said most liberal arts colleges would meet my requirements?? so...any other outstanding recommendations?? thanx a lot

thank u too hudsonvalley51...u have given very useful information as well. yes, i have learned that the location and the weather might not be very good about hamilton....however, i only found a few schools who would full meet my requirements...like carleton, hamilton, middlebury....those r the ones considered outstanding in my inquired fields```did i miss some schools? carleton has a terrible weather i believe...so hamilton and mid ~~in comparison which would be a better choice for me?? thanx and all the best

Amherst is also a great choice.

Esti, there are dozens of liberal arts colleges that would meet your first three requirements. The difficulty is going to be #4, financial aid for an international student. First, could you confirm that you would qualify for need based aid, because if you're looking for merit aid your list is going to be even shorter.

Severe winters with lots of snow are not necessarily "terrible." Many kids enjoy the winter activities.

Without knowing your qualifications it's difficult to give you recommendations, but two other schools that are generous with financial aid to internationals are Williams and Macalester.

thanx for lmpw and momrath, both of u have given helpful information. for lmpw, Amherst is definetely a great choice, but i doubt it might be a bit too difficult for me. for momrath, yes, am looking for need-based aid. now am looking for a school that is both generous and meets my need, then i will apply for ED~~generally speaking, i know many people who got good financial aid pakage from lots of liberal art colleges whose ranks were above 50. so..now i just want to hear your suggestions regardless of the possibility to get in(i will consider that later)....so~`i just wanna hear which colleges u guys recommend which would best(ones who r outstanding regarding those 3 requierments) meet my needs as shown in number 1-3. thank u all and all the best to u all!

Try the "colleges" section of the CC discussion boards. Go under "h" for hamilton. You may find students who are there, or their parents.

thanx for your suggestion lafalum84, i have already done that.

All three schools you mention, Hamilton, Middlebury and Carleton, will fulfill your "requirements" and are well thought out choices. You should understand that beyond weather issues, the tone is distinctly different at each.

Hamilton will feel the most physically isolated given its smaller student body, very small town location, and lack of any meaningful city within striking distance. That isolation does, however, help to make the school very campus-centric and tight knit. I've found alumni to be an exceptionally devoted group.

Middlebury straddles a similarly very small town but has a student body almost 50% larger than Hamilton and will probably feel less "small." Sports are a more important component of student life here than at your other choices (the single exception possibly being Frisbee mania at Carleton). Burlington is a very appealing small city offering a great change of pace and can be reached within an hour by car.

Carleton adjoins Northfield, a historic larger town of around 18,000. Its campus includes a 900 acre arboretum and 2 small lakes, but Minneapolis-St. Paul big city drama is only 35 miles away. The atmosphere on campus is probably best described as Midwestern-friendly, supportive and fun loving. Alumni are a similarly devoted group - annual giving rates are consistently the highest of any college in the country.

Good luck.

thank u so so so much 1190!! u have give really very useful information!! all the best and thank u again!
