Hand Scoring - is it worth it?

Like everyone else, I received my october act scores yesterday and was a little upset with my score. I got a 31 for the second time, but was surprised in the wrong way on this occasion. The subsection scores were very unexpected. The english section has always been easy for me, and I felt especially so this time around - yet I scored worse than both of my previous rounds (unless someone else was surprised by their english scores , I find this peculiar). My math score was as expected (32) and my reading score, much higher than expected (34). Although science kicked my butt, I felt I should've done better than the 26 I received.

Before, I got a 33 and 34 on english and this time I got a 30. Could the curve have been that harsh? I finished with nearly 15 minutes to spare. It really does seem to me that this may be a scoring mistake...Do you guys think it possibly could be, or did I just do worse this time?

If anyone has any history with the hand rescoring service, would you say that it's worth the $30? I'm not rich enough to just be throwing this kind of money away, but I think I would really benefit from an extra point on the composite (if I indeed scored 33+). Have any of you received a mistaken score and had it changed via rescoring?

Sorry for the super-length. I have a tendency to ramble. As always, thanks for responses.

I understand your frustration. However, even if there was a scoring mistake, which is unlikely, the chance of raising your composite is slim, especially because you scored a 30.5 and it got rounded up.

^Exactly. They'd have to find at least 4 errors to bump up your composite which is very unlikely. But to answer another question, yes I believe the English curve was really harsh this time.

I don't think you should let them hand score it. It probably won't change much if at all.

I understand that I may not get the 4 points I hope for, but I believe ACT reimburses the fee if any mistake in scoring at all is found. Does anyone have any experience with handscoring whatsoever?

If not to get it handscored, should I retake in december? Is it worth it? After two 31s, can I still improve?

Anyone have experience with handscoring?

Sammy,

I believe this is for people who have noticed a bigger difference in their scores than 4 points (something substantial, like 30 -> 10).
It's still worth a shot if you'd like to do it. But keep in mind the test might not have been curved as nicely as last time.
