My d has just started her junior year, and is developing an interest in natural sciences/environmental. She loved biology & is now taking botany which she also loves.

I would love to find a hands on, experiential type summer program for her for next summer--we live in the Southeast.

Here are some to get you started. I don't know anything about them. You can also search through the Summer Program threads, as there are lots of programs listed. Also, do a google search, as I'm sure you can find a lot more.

Please? Any word from all of you educated parents out there? I think a camp like program that's very hands on and participatory, although with some academics, would be the best. Thanks!

mum07, both these programs look fabulous! Would you mind sharing why your daughter decided not to attend either of them? They look pretty intense but worthwhile.

dg5052,
My daughter would have loved to attend either of these programs but she was determined to go overseas last summer and the dates of the program she attended overlapped those of the environmental programs. She was particularly interested in the BELL program at Brown. She also considered SCA, which a couple of her friends ended up doing. She ended up having a wonderful summer, so I guess it all worked out. However, she is still passionate about the environment and is applying to colleges as a civil/environmental engineering major.

Any other suggestions? Mum07's 2 suggestions look top-notch, but I wonder if there are others--hands-on, biology/botany/ecology summer science programs for a rising senior?

Hi ,
My son did this 2 week residential program last July as an upcoming senior , and loved it. This is a program for HS juniors, seniors interested in the environment. It was very well run - they had action packed days, inside & outside(mostly)the classroom, 2 afternoons on a boat performing water samples , a trip to a bog , wind farm & other outings.. They also went on a camping trip to the Adirondacks..

A few of the professors (Philo, economics, geology, politics/environmental law) gave seminars and it was coordinated by the Education department of HWS.

Definitely worth looking into and we recommend it highly. Go apply!

concernedforeign and mum07,
im applying for ESSYI: Hobart & William Smith Colleges this summer. i was wondering if they offered any financial aid? also what were your children’s stats bc i want to see how competitive this program is.
