Is it convenient for clothes to be handwashed at Duke (ie. is there a special place for them to be handwashed and hanged?). I have A LOT of silk-material clothes and I don't want to ruin them by machine-washing them. Any suggestion would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I’m not a girl nor do I have m(any) silk clothes but I can’t really think of anything besides the bathroom sink. There was a thread earlier in the year about this (specifically silk underwear or something like that) and the person suggested the sink and just hanging it in your room. But since you said you have a lot of silk clothes that probably wouldn’t work. I’d suggest leaving that stuff home and bringing some more durable clothes like cotton stuff but then again, I’m a guy so my perspective is limited.

Edit: now that I think about it, the thread might not be on the Duke forum but you can probably check over at the college life forum on CC if you can’t find it here.

No - there is no special place for handwashing and hanging clothes in the laundry areas at Duke. My D avoids taking items that need hand washing.

I would also suggest that you not try to hand wash them in the bathroom and hang dry in your room especially since you will be sharing space with a roommate.

You may want to rethink your wardrobe.

Duke does have some sort of laundry/dry cleaning service, correct? I guess if you only had a few items of clothing that needed special care you could always send those out every so often. Probably what I’ll do with some of my nicer clothes that I want to bring.

There are definitely dry cleaners around Duke. I don’t think Duke runs one (not counting the laundry service for the hospital) and I don’t know if Devil’s Laundry has special service (I think they might for an extra fee but you might need to buy their regular service too).

Galaxy - I see you are an International Student - you might want to contact the International House. They might even be able to refer you to a student from your home country. Here is the link and contact information can be found on the left hand side of the page:

Good luck! My D spent last summer in Hanoi and loved it. Hope you enjoy Duke University.

Thank you all a lot
well it does seem like I have to reconsider the clothes I will be taking to Duke :)

@singersmom: There’s only one “Vietnamese from Vietnam” guy at Duke, and we knew each other already (went to same high school). I’m glad your D got the chance to spend the summer in my beautiful hometown Hanoi
did she go on the Duke Engage?

haha yeah. it’s not really practical. I have a lot of handwash only bras and it is really inconvenient

from what I recall from my son’s freshman year at Duke, you get enough free Tshirts about various things that you can wear a new one every day and not do laundry for a month. He just graduated and we are always finding Tshirts from some pancake breakfast or festival or sports event or another…

I realize a girl used to silk won’t likely wear Tshirts often with stuff written all over it…but make room in your drawers for them… :)

OK…I am going to continue on responding to this handwashing question. ??? Son at Duke had trouble getting his towel to be dry between showers when he moved to the main campus and had air-conditioning second and third year. Send a big microfiber towel with your kids to college…they dry tons faster if your son or daughter had to shower every few hours due to sports etc…there isn’t a lot of room to hang stuff up for towels…ditto you can roll things you hand wash in a microfiber towel and it dries faster…ditto…dry your hair tons faster too.
Aquis is a brand I think that makes them in big long sizes…I gave one to roommate too and they loved them

I’m not a “silky” type person in the sense that I don’t ever wear tshirts
just that silk-material apparel is available in local area with ridiculously cheap price, plus they go very well with the hot and humid weather here ![]()
and thanks for that microfiber towel idea. I definitely will get one.
