Just curious at your opinion-my son has been recruited as an athlete at vassar but also has a strong interest in music and has good academics as well. He is excellent at his sport and would probably be part of a building process there. Are there other athletes facing this decision and if anyone else has an opinion that would be great.

My son is first year at Vassar now. He loves it, but is a tiny bit disappointed because he had the fantasy that everyone would be a sparkling intellect and I don't think everyone at ANY school is a genius. But it is wonderful. He doesn't feel sports are a big deal there, but others may feel differently. The year has just begun anyway.

Thanks for your reply-aeisenberg. Been checking back often to see if anyone had an opinion. Is your son an athlete? Just curious to see if athletes mix well into campus in general or stick to themselves. What are some important places on campus to visit to get a good look at the campus?

I'm really not an expert. I just know that my son picked Vassar precisely because it didn't have football. He loves soccer and wants to play non-varsity, but said he hasn't found a team. As I said, the year is still very new. I am quite sure they are integrated into the campus at large. If he is serious about Vassar, your son should definitely spend a day and meet some kids (including athletes). The regular tour will hit the highlights. The library is gorgeous as is the chapel. We just loved it there; it was my son's first choice.

I'm a freshman at Vassar, and I play field hockey. I wasn't recruited; I walked on after admission. Still, I'm happy I did it. I came a few days earlier than all the other freshmen, and I have a network of upperclassmen. I'm not anywhere near the best on my team, so I can't help you in the area of being a building process. The Liberty League is tough for field hockey; it might be the same way for your son's sport.
Has he done an overnight at Vassar? Next week I'm hosting a field hockey prospie and I'm excited about that.
Bottom line- I'm happy. I'm a good student. I'm an athlete. But I love the pepole and the sports and the academics here.

Believe-it-or-not, I have two sons currently at Vassar. My younger one is a sports lover (particularly soccer). Like "aeisenberg's" son, he has joined the non-varsity team. There's a great balance for those who are sport lovers and those who are not (like my older son). We're all crazy about Vassar. It's a perfect fit for a wide variety of interests, and contrary to popular belief, one doesn't have to be a lover of theratre, dance, music to find one's "place."

Heads up on teams in a building phase:

One piece of advice I've seen on CC is that if your team is in a building phase, it will get more competitive each year and current starters will not necessarity start in following years. It sounds like this is not an issue for your son, but will be for some.

This was 'the dream' college...It still hurts!

too many reasons to explain

Katy123 Not Fair!!! Can you elaborate some?
