Happy Books

...as opposed to depressing books.

I'm tired of reading Dickens (orphans), Poe (plain creepy), and Rand (arghhh).

Have any recommendations?

Yes any suggestions?

Jane Austen

Princess Bride!!!

Anything Hermann Hesse

jonathan safran foer

Ferdydurke by Witold Gombrowicz

That book is just c-r-azy

Maybe this isn't the most happy book, but my favorite is "The Ciderhouse Rules."

I don't find Rand to be depressing. Quite the opposite, actually.

"I don't find Rand to be depressing. Quite the opposite, actually."

Yes but most of her books (ex. Anthem or We the Living) are miserable in the beginning until the last chapter when the character finds hope/understanding blah blah blah...at any rate, Rand annoys me b/c you can sum up what she has to say in less than a page instead of going through 400+ pages of repetitive crap.

David Sedaris

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, etc. :)

Any Calvin and Hobbes compendium. Trust me, it counts as philosophy. It may be cynical, but it's funny as anything.

wiat, I'm just curious. BelleReve, your name...does it come from "A streetcar named Desire?"

I have to agree with Emeraldkity, I love David Sedaris.

Herman Hesse? I hated Siddhartha.

A few happy books are:
Anything written by Elizabeth Peters
Mary Stewart's Merlin trilogy
Sophie's World/u
Jan Karon's Mitford series
Joseph Girzone's Joshua series

Nom - I LOVE Calvin and Hobbes. I second that suggestion even though it may not be a novel.

"wiat, I'm just curious. BelleReve, your name...does it come from "A streetcar named Desire?"

Yes, it does ^__^

do you classify that book (play) as happy?

happy people usually dont write good books, depressed writers on the other hand....
