Happy, but considering a transfer- What to do!?

I am a second-year at Syracuse University. And unlike many of the posts in the transfer catergory... I am generally happy @ my school.

Here's the deal. I came in as a Broadcast Journalism major, but soon found out it wasn't for me. Always having an interest in Medicine, I decided that Pre-Med was the way to go for me, even though I'd continue my love of communications. So I became a Public Relations major, with a minor in Bio, hoping to one day go to med school.

I am in a fraternity, of which I pledged last semester, and many organizations and clubs. I have some decent friends, and am generally content in my situation. However, there are some definite advantages to transferring.

If i transferred to the University of Maryland, College Park, I'd be able to take the pre-med classes I'm taking for about 35,000 dollars less a year, and they'd be just as effective in my preparation for a career in med school. I'd also be able to stay another year @ UMD, take classes I missed during my first year, of which I did not take sciences, and I'd be able to prepare for the MCAT while still continuing my studies as a 5th-year Senior. At Syracuse, due to the exorbitant tuition, I would be forced to graduate after four-years, effectively forcing me to get evvvverything done in the next 5 semesters.

Then there's the social aspect. Though I've made good friends, my heart lies at home, in Maryland. My best friends in the world go to school in College Park, as does my girlfriend of 3 years. My family, whom I cannot seem to see enough of, lives 45 minutes north in Baltimore, and I would love to be that close to them again.

So... as I go through in my mind, I can't get to a reasonable conclusion. There are pros and cons with every aspect of the decision. I know that whatever decision I make, I will inevitably be happy with- I'm not one to regret... so now all I have to do is, well, make the decision!

What do you think? any advice will help. I appreciate it.

When I first read your post and saw how much less you’d be paying for Maryland, I’d STRONGLY consider Maryland. The fact that your girlfriend and best friends are there, are just toppings.

However, I’m not too familiar with rankings and how many people Maryland put into Med School compared to your current place. That might be also something you want to look at. If they are similar enough in your opinion, I’d take the transfer.

Yes, the amounts of students who get into medical school are similar. Since I would probably be applying for med schools in/around Maryland, it could probably be an asset to be in a state school, too.

Well obviously the decision is yours, but if you’re taking a poll :D… when lining up the pros and cons, $35,000 is a lot of pros ;). I’d do the transfer if I were you. UMd-CP has a great and ever-increasing reputation.
