HAPPY College Acceptances

"Can't wait to see who comes off which waitlists! Hrrrrrmmmmm ... Let's try to keep it on topic like we agreed at the beginning. Don't nobody make me go redneck on ya!"

My post wasn't meant to hijack this thread into a "waitlist" thread. I was merely asking that my dd's status be changed on the list.

So, for anybody that's knew, etc., please don't discuss waitlists here.

Thank you.

"So, for anybody that's knew**, etc., please don't discuss waitlists here."

** sorry about the misspelling. :)

Midgetmom,
I am trying to stay out of all controversial discussions as I feel that everyone's opinions on here have merit and are meant with the best intentions, but I really do not think that thesbo was insinuating that you were hijacking this thread or trying to make it a 'waitlist' thread. In fact, I believe she was sincere in wanting to know who is getting acceptances off the waitlists so that we can add them to the acceptance pool and share in their good news. Please don't take everything said so personally. And congrats and best wishes to your d...it is every bit as noteworthy to let others know that success can be found via the 'waitlist' route!

Ah, the misinterpretation of subtext ... A favorite tool of the cybertroll. OF COURSE waitlistees are welcome! HOLLA!!!

gkoukla: I was waitlisted for acting. I think they took something like 7 girls and had 5 on the waitlist...I knew of one girl who got in off of the waitlist, but she was a grad student. To make matters worse, my best friend was accepted to CMU and waitlisted at Juilliard, and at the last minute Juilliard offered him a place, and he took it. He said that about half of the kids in his class are grad students...it's tough to have to compete with them for spots.

lindsaylou33: Yes, and in fact, the three sopranos were transfer students who were accepted for voice. Maybe they are trying to convey a message that they like transfer and grad students? Is your best friend enjoying Juilliard?

lindsaylou33-

It does appear to me that Juilliard does seem to take many, if not most students (acting), with some college training. This does not seem to be the case for dance or voice, but seems to hold true for actors. You should be congratulated for making the waitlist.

My daughter has an older (than herself) friend who attends Juilliard for acting and I recall when she was a freshman there, she told me that she was just about the only one in the program who was merely 18 and everyone was older than her in the acting program.

When my D was considering whether or not to apply to Juilliard for voice and the deadline for submitting the CD was approaching, her voice teacher said that although she thought my D had a shot at being asked to audition (this was after her strong placement at NFAA), she considered Juilliard to be a better choice as a "finishing school." Given the age that the voice matures, it really makes sense that voice training the likes of that offered at Juilliard may be better taken advantage of at a later time in one's education, as witness the number of transfers and graduate students who seem to be accepted for voice. As much as my D wanted to send in a CD in hopes of being allowed to audition (and it would have not been hard to send one because she had already recorded most of what was requested for the pre-audition screening as part of her NFAA submission), she did not do so. In the end, she realized that by submitting the CD when she had no real intention of attending the program at that time was patently unfair. On the remote chance that she was offered an audition, she might have kept another candidate from being heard. If she were really serious about pursuing Vocal Performance at this juncture she would have wanted to audition for VP at several of the schools where she auditioned for MT and she never requested to do that. I was glad she was able to come to see that ego needed to take a back seat to reality and fairness. The other programs at Juilliard, Instrumental Music, Acting and Dance are well suited to undergraduate and sometimes even younger students, many of whom, especially those in Music and Dance, have been training for these careers from a very young age.

Am I missing something? I don't see any PSU people yet on the big list. I wonder if anyone made it. My D & I visited last week, and of course she fell in love with the campus, and the program. I hope someone from our forum gets in so we can find out even more about it! Just in case her dreams are one day realized...

Oops, I see Inkybib is listed, my mistake

Melsmom,
PSU has an incoming freshman class of 14 students - 7 men and 7 women. My D reports that there were some very talented students auditioning this year. I don't think that this incoming group has any connection to the CC board, but I could be wrong. There ARE many lurkers out there you know! There are a few people who post here
( myself and bdwaymom to name a few ) who would be happy to answer any questions you or your D might have. Our girls are completing their sophmore year in the MT program and are very happy!

Monkey and BdwayMom ARE the best resource on PSU as their D's are in the program.

My daughter and Freelance's daughter were both accepted to PSU. Mine auditioned on campus (met Monkey's D and BdwayMom's D there!). My D really liked the program and it is hard to turn these schools down, that is for sure. If you ever want to ask anything about this year's auditions or stuff like that, I could try to help.
Susan

Oh how she loved it (PSU), we even got to see the kids give a little show of scenes that they directed themselves (we skipped out of the formal tour for JRs.) I wonder if Monkey or BdwayMom's Ds performed in it?! They were very talented and relaxed about the whole thing. She thought the Jazz class was pretty good too. We met CL and talked about him directing in CT this Fall, too. This was only my D's 3rd campus visit & I think it will be a tough one to beat!

PS. Thanks for the offer about audition help, I'm sure we'll take you up on it as the time approaches...I'm just a little overwhelmed with all the prep stuff going on!

My D just got a phone call that she was taken off the waitlist at UARTS. Hope this helps kids waiting next year to know what dates waitlists open up.

Catsmom, I know this was not the purpose of your post, but congrats to your daughter for another acceptance. I know that her "ride" with the college process had ups/downs but she surely has ended this season on an UP! :D

Melsmom,
Was the scene showing that of the sophmore studio class? For their last set of scenes they were able to choose whom they wanted to work with, the scene and song, and directed themselves. If that is what you saw, you did indeed see monkey's and bdwaymom's daughters! They worked together in the scene from Thoroughly Modern Millie ( "The Way the Other Half Lives" )
Glad to hear she had a great impression of Penn State's MT program. There really IS a good fit program for everyone - it just takes a lot of exploration and investigation into lots of them to find the one that is just right for each individual. Let me know if you have any questions along the way. I'd be happy to help.

I don't know if you're deleting all acceptances once a student makes the final decision or if I should put this on another thread...but here's our final decision.

My D has decided to attend Elon University in NC for BFA MT. All the other schools were great, but she feels this is the best fit and is very excited about the faculty and fellow MT students. Anyone else going to Elon?

Congratulations to your daughter SouthernVoice. One of my D's best friends is going to Elon for MT. My D was accepted as well for acting but ultimately chose a different school. She knows 3 current students there who are all head over heels with the program and all have performance jobs this summer. I think it sounds like a perfect fit for your D. Elon is a gorgeous school with genuinely caring faculty and staff and a very supportive group of students. Congratulations again!!
