Just had our first trick or treaters @ 4:14. A dad squirrel and two little squirrels (very scary, I dislike squirrels).
Went to Safeway at 1 pm and they were OUT of candy. I got more chips and then went to the other supermarket (my brother wanted me to buy candy for his house).
We haven’t had a trick or treater for many years here. All the kids on our street are older.
BUT our town has a great downtown trick or treat event that I just got back from. Vendors from many many businesses were handing out everything from hot mulled cider to lattes to candy to cotton candy to popcorn. Tons of kids, and then a little parade to the town party.
We’re sitting here in our new house with five boxes of full size candy bars and no trick-or-treaters. I guess the candy will go to the food bank next week. I know there are some young kids on our street, but maybe their parents only do the church sponsored “Harvest” parties and won’t celebrate Halloween.
At our temporary house we gave out the full size candy bars last year and kids were thrilled. I felt awful to find out that the RE agent left on the outside lights there and kids have been going to the door, only to be disappointed.
On a happy note, we just got a photo of GD1 in the costume I made for her. She was bouncing up and down with excitement.
Update to say that I posted too early and we did end up with about 20 trick-or-treaters, most of whom were teens. So happy I got to see the little ones from our street. So cute! Everyone said thanks, and the adults were as pleased as the kids to be offered multiple full size candy bars.
i get very nostalgic with HH & TTing - its quite slower in our hood than it was say 15 yrs ago. however, i’ve been asking the kids like 8 or older for tricks tonight before they get their treat. Its fun to see what they come up with spontaneously! ive had cartwheels, jokes, noises, splits, pushups, magic tricks and all sort of silly things. why not!?
Here in central Iowa it is standard for the kids to tell jokes when trick or treating. Most of the local TV stations have their weather people tell kid friendly jokes every day for the week leading up to beggar’s night so the kids are prepared.
We had a lot of kids early, then a real lull, and now more when I thought it was quieting down. Now we are almost out of candy!! Guess we shouldn’t have eaten so much of it. Oops.
Halloween officially closed for our neighborhood. Pretty good number of trick or treaters, and some very excited, “They’ve got the BIG BARS!” shouted as mini hoards descended on our house.
We had our fair share of teens, and even some adults getting into the action (if you say “Trick or Treat!” you get candy as far as DH is concerned).
I was stuck by how sweet and kind all the kids, young and old, are during Halloween. Lots of thank yous, kids making make room for their friends picking out candy bars, and even some ooh and aahs over “Kitty!” our big, grumpy house cat who kept walking to the door with me to greet the ghosts, goblins, princesses and superheroes.
Nice way to end the month, hope everyone else had safe, happy and fun Halloween!
Wow, I have never lived anywhere with official Halloween dates or hours.
We have just unplugged our Halloween lights and have run out of treats. Over the years our neighborhood has matured. I feel kind of sorry for the 6-10 year olds who can’t even run wild in our cul de sac from one lawn to another.
We start out giving one, then we are afraid of getting stuck with it so we give out multiples and then we go back to one so we don’t run out. We are left with about 15 pieces and will stop handing out soon. Dh can take it to work in the morning so it’s all good.
We have a street kind of thing, where candy is put out at the end of the street, neighbors gather and bring food to share. Haven’t done it since Covid and great to have it back tonight!
We have successfully given out about 12 lbs of old Mardi Gras beads from our yrs in LA. Offered them mini chocolate bars vs beads, most kids over 9wanted beads. Both bowls emptied by 8:00. No more doorbells after that.
Wow, did you make individual bags?
I remember trick or treating in San Francisco when I was very young, and people made caramel or candy apples, popcorn treats, and other stuff. Now it’s all pre-packaged, or most parents would probably make kids trash it. (I would have when my kids were young, unless I knew the giver personally).
