I just thought I'd start a thread about financial aid. Now some probably don't need to worry about this, but if you do I am curious how satisfied you are with your package.

Let us know if it went well for you. I have not received mine yet.

Not to be too ungracious about this, but I'd say don't look a gift horse in the mouth. If you are fortunate enough to be admitted ED to a top school you generally go into the process knowing that you aren't going to be in a position to do too much shopping around for best possible financial aid. There are an awful lot of people in more heavily populated areas who would be happy to have gotten in ED and pay full freight. So congratulations to you and good luck, but please don't start thinking about how much more you might be getting in terms of aid.

I didn't intend to sound like I was looking for a free ride or anything like that. I was simply curious as to how others felt about the financial aid package they received. I know the committment I made to attend Williams and I do not have second thoughts because I already know Williams is great about covering the full NEED, not WANT. Anyway, I was just starting up a little conversation.

actually, it's pretty dire circumstances for some of us ( i know gandalf has same problem). my financial status is bad to the level, that we can't really attend without adequate financial aid. Yes i knew that by applying early, i threw away my chance to negotiate aid, but williams admission officer convinced me that the college would still provide very adequate aid, and I am pretty confident taht they will keep their promise.

hopemanjkjk - don't worry too much about the financial aid. The people in Williams Financial Aid Office are pretty approachable and willing to consider students' special circumstances. Applying ED does not mean that you threw away your chance to "negotiate" aid. However, the use of the word "negotiate" here is really not appropriate. You can always let the Aid office know if the package you received is not adequate. Let them know your situation; you will be surprised to find out that you would not be punished financially as an ED applicant. Believe me, the parent of a class '08 international student who was also accepted ED and required financial aid.

yes--your aid package is just as negotiable ED as it is RD. What you lose is other packages to compare the Williams package with that you would get RD. Chances are, they wouldn't be any better than what you got through Williams. Even committed ED applicants can go to the finaid office and say "this wasn't enough"--if you make a convincing enough case they'll give you more, no different than they would for an RD candidate.

hey congrats hopemanjkjk I just had a curious question, did ur letter talk about the number of internationals accepted or something? just wondering....cause it seems like they accept many more internationals rd than ed.. thanks

nah.. it didn't say anything.... and i got my financial support, we are extremely pleased.... they actually wanted us to pay less than what we were willing to pay.. unbelievable...

hopemanjkjk - Good to know that you are happy with your financial aid package. As I posted yesterday and several times previously, Williams is really generous and accommodating to their students. Congratulations!

Yes, it is crazy that it is cheaper for me to go to an awesome private school than a public university. Most of my friends and classmates think I am crazy to apply to what they see as a "super expensive school" but they don't realize that in the end it is much cheaper if you get in. At least in my case.

im jealous that all these people are saying that williams is making them pay less than what they had expected. as an amherst ed acceptee, i'm in a pretty unfortunate position when it comes to financial aid. i was pretty shocked because i thought they would "meet my need"... maybe with some discussion they can reduce it, we'll see.

That's great that you guys got such good financial aid...it would certainly make it much easier for me to attend if I get in! Oh, and BTW, Mattmom's comments were ridiculous.

hopeman jkjk ....just a question...you are a boy right?? can you read korean?
