Happy with UNIT 3 STD TRIPLE?

I got unit 3 triple and thought i got a bad deal but from what im reading it sounds like i lucked out.

Is it the most social? Why? How is it different from unit 1 n 2?

Good parties I assume? Then how easy/hard is it to find some quiet time/study time?

How are the bathrooms? How is it set up?

How are triples?

If Im the first to arrive, which spot is the best? Which bunk/desk/closet such should I take? (Is there only two closets for the triple?)

What is so great about it?

What is so bad about it?

How is the theft/crime rate?

When I went to OHP, I stayed with a host that was in a triple, and it wasn’t too noisy. I was there from 8 PM to 1 AM, and my host’s roommate was studying chemistry in her room peacefully. There weren’t too many people in the hallways just partying or anything like that but that was only ONE day so idk what it’s like the rest of the time. One of their friends also came just to hang out but it was still quiet.

It’s diff from Unit 1 and 2 I guess because it’s the closest to campus. I also LOVE it because it’s right near the restaurants and the part of the campus that’s more “alive” outside. Coming from a small town, that’s exactly what I wanted. Unit 2 is way far back and Unit 1 is a little closer to the campus but still further than Unit 3 I’m pretty sure.

Idk

Bathrooms were alriiight. lol I guess I wasn’t expecting that type of bathroom but it looks more like bathrooms u see when you go to a shopping center or Costco (but less embellished). The showers are pretty big but it’s hard to change IN the bathroom so my host said they usually just put a towel on and go to their room and change.

Triples are not that crowded because their bunked. A little small, but it was a decent size for me at least. I went to USF when I thought I wasn’t going to get in anywhere and rooms were TINY. So these are a lot better.

Last time, my host said that they already talked about which bed they would have ONLINE through facebook. So you might decide on there too? But I would choose the bed above the desk so that you don’t bother ur roommates or have to deal with their problems. You have ur own side and u can see them from ur bed.

Unit 3 is just awesome. That’s why I chose it! : ] Everything’s great about it. Location, atmosphere, etc.

Bathroom might be far from ur dorm? Nothin really though. Maybe the view?

dk just be street smart. Don’t flash a coach bag and diamond rings.

“lucked out” is a positive term. I found living in a triple fine as I don’t really care about having a lot of space.

Leftist can you clarify?

We lucked out because it’s difficult to live in a triple?

Well, you’re not going to be partying in the dorms (you’d go to frat row or an apartment for that), so it should be pretty quiet whenever you want “quiet time” unless there are some loud people on your floor. And if it is loud, you can always tell your room/floor mates to calm down or something.

I lived in Unit 1, so I’m not sure if Unit 3 is any different other than having low ceilings (my friends in Norton and Ida Sproul said they couldn’t sit upright in their top bunks or else they’d hit the ceiling). But triples can be good or bad depending on your roommates. As berry said, the bunk above the desk might be your best bet. My roommate who got the bottom bunk always woke up whenever my roommate on the top bunk got off his bed. This was always a problem, but what can you do about being a light sleeper? I had organized roommates so our triple always looked like it was bigger than the others on our floor, but this was only because we didn’t bring a lot of junk and actually brought only what we needed and were able to fit a lot of stuff in the closet. If you follow suit you can have a spacious triple if you want it, but even one roommate with a whole lot of junk can make the room seem smaller than it is.
And just to let you know, if you get Beverly Cleary Hall in Unit 3 the rooms will be bigger than the average triple in the Units.

I had a Unit 3 triple freshman year and a Unit 3 double soph year (chose the same building with some old floormates). I absolutely love Unit 3 and do think you lucked out with it =).

Triples are pretty small but you’ll find that there is actually a lot of storage space and that no space is really wasted. You should definitely try to get there early on move-in day to get a closet and the bed/desk you want. I’d encourage taking the bed above the desk and the closet on that side because you get your own side of the room. Don’t worry about 3 people being in the room all the time because that won’t happen very much.

I made really great friends both years in Unit 3 and it was very easy. For the first couple weeks, about 15-20 people always ended up going to dinner together at Cafe 3. Groups separate over time, of course, but it’s really nice being surrounded by so many friendly people in the beginning. You can always find someone to do something with you. People also go to parties together in big groups in the beginning because everyone is new to the frat/drinking scene and wants to try it out. From my experiences with talking to RAs, Unit 3 is always expected to be the most social/partying dorms and the RAs don’t discourage it.

Bathrooms - one big bathroom on each floor. There are lockers and you can take 2 or 3 if you want for all your bathroom stuff haha. There are 5 shower stalls which is plenty, I’ve never had to wait to shower. They designate standing/sitting stalls which is nice.

Theft - nothing actually happens, it feels pretty safe. Just don’t leave your laptop in the lounge when no one’s going to be there for an hour. Plenty of people did do that and nothing happened though.

Anyway, you will probably end up loving Unit 3 and Berkeley. You’re right on Telegraph, surrounded by hundreds of restaurants and stores and closest to the exciting parts of campus. Oh and if you’re lucky you get the most gorgeous view of SF, the bay, and the Golden Gate :). I miss it already.

wow that’s awesome! Did u like double or triple better? I got a double and I was stoked. Noise bothers me so I’d rather have a double, but I’m just curious to see which one U liked better because then i can request a triple next year. Also, did u request the same rommates in ur second year? You mentioned they were good friends, or do most ppl live with them in an apt after the 2nd year?

I liked the double better but the triple wasn’t as bad as I was expecting it to be… everything else about unit 3 made up for it.

I was closer to other floormates than my roommates first year and we did try to look for an apartment but ended up dorming another year. I got to pick my roommate and the room though. Got a gorgeous apartment with 3 others for next year though so it all worked out :)

I will assume that Berkeley doesn’t tell me who my roommates are until the day of the move in? I’m international so I’ll get to move in early which will be a plus.

That’s good to hear (since I’m in a double!) You can stay a 3rd year in dorms? What’s the difference between floormates and roommates? Is your apartment for next year close to school or do you have to drive now?

There is only two years of guaranteed housing. But I would think two years max would make anyone sick of the dorms.

Roommates = people you share a room with.
Floormates = people you share a floor with.

To OP - there are 3 closets. I think you should be happy by the way! I had a Unit 3 triple last year even though it was my 4th choice. It was cool though. We did have some “dorm parties,” but nothing too crazy. If you get a messy roommate, it could cut the size of the room in half though (like mine). If you get clean roommates, it will look much more spacious.

Good - social, close to campus, close to restaurants, Bear Market

Bad - sometimes too noisy, low ceilings, the elevators break sometimes

i got u3 triple too, it was my first choice and i’m pumped! i figure from reading these boards that unit three is most social, great dining commons and closest to campus. i kindof was hesitant about choosing triple but i figured it gave me a better chance of getting in that unit. and i like the coed aspect of it.

with low ceilings do you hit ur head when ur on the top bunk?

Yes, at least if you’re tall enough…you most likely won’t just getting out of bed unless you jump or go higher than sitting on your bed. I’m six feet tall and my head scraped the ceiling when I was sitting on my bed (the loft). The person on the top bunk had some issues with the same situation because the top bunk is indeed slightly higher than the loft.

So I’m going to assume if you get a triple, it’s best to get the single bed with one of the desks under it and the closet on the same side?

At first I thought the best bed in a triple would would be the one closest to the floor(with a bed on top of it), since you can wake up easy in the morning(no ladder to walk down) and just plop onto your bed at the end of a long day. or am i just talking bullsh1t? lol

What are some things that you guys in a triple wished you should have done during the move in day? By that I mean things like getting the best bed, getting the best closet, etc

Why didn’t you just ask this in your own thread? Maybe you should work out with your roommates on who gets what bed, closet, rather than doing “everyone for himself.”

Unit 3 Triples also vary based on what hall you’re in.
If you’re in the four (Norton/Ida Sproul/Spens-Black/Priestley) the Triple Rooms there are smaller than the Unit 3 Triples at Beverly Cleary.
