My neighbor is interested in St. Olaf and in many ways seems to fit the mold, but in others, maybe not... What do you think?
Super dedicated to studying...valedictorian, NMF, Presidential Scholar, etc
Christian, not into the whole partying thing

BUT - not even a little bit musical and or athletic...

She wants to be with fun, smart people who appreciate quirky. Do you think she would be happy at St. Olaf or would she fit in better elsewhere?

I have a Jr. at St. Olaf who is also not into music (except of the iPod variety!) and certainly not athletic! He is also not a partier and has found a fabulous group of friends at St. Olaf, after being very much a loner at our suburban NJ high school, where he was quite miserable. St. Olaf has absolutely been a godsend for our son and family, and we recommend it to everyone who is looking for a wonderful, friendly, smart, non-party-animal group of kids(though partying obviously does go on) He and his friends spend many evenings just hanging out, going to Olaf-sponsored films and concerts, playing board games (yup--I'm telling the truth here), etc. Good luck to your neighbor--at least have them check out St. Olaf!

I think she would love it! I didn't find athletics or music to be suffocating when I visited, although they're certainly a strong presence if you're looking for them. What I find wonderful about St. Olaf's is that the kids have a blast without getting trashed every night.

I'm definitely not Christian, but I really appreciate the values that it's Lutheran affiliation brings and I'm looking forward to not being the odd one out for not wanting to drink.

The only thing that I would look into is your definition of "quirky". Not saying that everyone fits into the stereotypical mold, I tend to think of quirky as being associated with somewhere more like Bryn Mawr or Carleton.

Your neighbor should qualify for a good academic scholarship, as did my son. He has similar stats, and similar values (for example, not a "partier") and he is very happy and has made lots of friends. My son has zero interest in being a musician, and has hooked into the fine science program. Although he did very well in high school, he is still finding the academics sufficiently challenging. Encourage your neighbor to come out and visit.

We just visited St Olaf & were impressed--smart kids, challenging classes, etc. Met several "artsy"-creative type kids. My D is also hoping that there are quirky kids there, too---anybody know?
