I am deciding between NYU and University of South Carolina honors. With money and academics and everything included, which college would be the better choice IF I want to pursue a career in medicine. I want to go where I would have the better chance of getting into medical school.

So long as you have strong grades, it doesn’t matter which university you attend. Go where you are most likely to succeed. And go to the least expensive option - medical school is very expensive.

In theory, the reputation of your undergrad institution has no bearing on admissions. However, in reality the quality of your research experience, availability of clinical volunteering experience, impressiveness of your recommendations and breadth of advanced coursework depends significantly on your undergrad institution. Frankly, I would hate to live in NYC and would decide against NYU on that basis, but ultimately, your thoughts are what is relevant. If you imagine yourself being happy and productive at USC, great for you. If you don’t think you could be, I can’t imagine that being a legitimate option.

Well I would rather live in New York, but I dont know if NYU is worth it or if I will be more likely to make better grades there or at the University of South Carolina. For medical school, I want to go to a very good university, so I guess I want to go wherever I have that chance. I think I might be able to do better at USC, but then again the honors program might be different and a lot harder.

Have you visited USC? We were impressed with USC when we toured several years ago. S was offered honors and nice scholarship (oos) but decided to stay instate.

Would going to NYU put a financial strain on your family? If it wouldn’t, I’d recommend going there, as you seem to like the school a lot more. As someone else mentioned, if your family can afford it, do not go somewhere that you won’t be happy at.

even if your family can afford NYU, its a huge waste of money. NOT WORTH IT save it for grad school.

Well, my dad said he would give me 100,000 dollars for NYU and then I would have to pay the rest myself. And its scary because I know, medical school is VERY expensive and what if I dont even get into medical school.

Coming up with 100k plus for your undergraduate education, and then turning around and paying for Med school is crazy.

Go to the place that is cheapest. Work hard. Get good grades. Develop strong relationships with your professors so that you have good letters of recommendation. Spend some of the savings from attending the cheaper place on a decent MCAT prep course.

Save the 100K and excel in the honors program at South Carolina. USC is a fine school. NYU is not worth 100K
