My friend wants to apply for Cal Class of 2012. He currently resides in N. California (cali resident) but has international status (in the process of getting his permanent residency, but not sure when) He is worried that his international status will backfire his chances for acceptance, since Cal is composed of 1~2% intl's and admissions is more competitive. The question is, HOW HARD is admissions for internationals? Is the bar raised way higher than it is for non-int'l/per.residents - US citizens?

I've seen admissions stats for in-state, out-of-state, and international.
In-state: 28%
Out-of-state: 20%
International: 12%
Seems way harder for internationals but this data may be a few years old.

For Fall 2006, 2,057 applied and 226 were accepted (11%). 103 enrolled.

I don't know exactly how much harder it is. I'm an international student and I consider myself very lucky that I got in. Feel free to ask me any questions.

You must be rich in order to attend berkeley as an international. They don't give internationals financial aid.

I was in the same boat as your friend:
Residing in Northern California, In the Process of Getting U.S. Permanent Residency at the time of application
And I got in.

thanks everyone for the info. (phroz3n and cy sunset, you guys must have been really good to get into Berkeley w.o perm. residency)

yeah! internationals are really HARD to get in! I know through my own experience!

@phroz3n: can you post your stats plz and country of origin

IMPT PLEASE SEEE ANYONE!!!! im in the opposite situation from your frend kevster. im a permanent cal. resident (since '03) NOT residing in california at the moment because im doing the british system (cambridge int'l examminations if uve herd of them) .so can anyone PLEASE TELL ME WHICH POOL OF APPLICANTS I WILL BE PUT IN? cal residents? or int'l student?
Admission to UC is number driven. I could say SAT I > 2100, SAT II (2)>1400.

but what really brings me down is my GPA, and GPA is undoubtedly one of the most important factors UCs consider (and I don't want to make mention of mine)

I got fds getting 4.0, 3.96, and all got rejected. I think the main reason is because they are international students.
