hard math question!

1) http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/4922/11162011165.jpg

Thanks in advance :)

Is the answer (E) 5.1?

The only reasonable answer is 5.1. Im too lazy to actually figure out by calculating it, but its clear that the answer must be greater than 5.

no, the answer is 4.9

It’s a right triangle with a hypotenuse of 5 and one leg of 1.
5^2 = 1^2 + a^2;
a^2 = 24;
a = sq rt of 24 = 4.8989

@JefferyJung your answer is correct but I can’t imagine the triangle, can you tell me? thank you

I drew something…

I don’t know how clear this is… If you don’t understand it, I’ll post a detailed explanation…

how did u know that the leg = 1 ?

^because the other leg of the triangle is drawn from the center of the smaller triangle which has radius 2. this line cuts the small leg of the triangle at “height” 2 also, and since the radius of the larger triangle is 3, the leg is 3-2=1

oh okay, thx

Could someone please explain how the triangle’s leg is 1? I couldn’t understand anything from AleaJactaEst’s explanation.

Draw the vertical line segments from each circle’s center down. Those are radii. The big one is 3, the little one is 2 and the difference is 1 – that’s the vertical leg of the right triangle.

^ That could not be more concise and to the point. For a moment there, I thought I was a complete dumbass lol, thank you for the elaboration.

Sorry! I guess I should have made that clearer. AleaJactaEst and pckeller’s explanations are exactly what I did. Basically, the difference between two radii is 3-2=1.

Thanks everyone, it’s clear now.
