Can anyone point me to hard stats on Trustee, Presidential and Dean Scholarships? For example, out of the total freshman class, how many students are recipients of these scholarships in each of the 3 categories? I appreciate any information.

they expect to give out 100 trustee and 200 presidential scholarship to each incoming class, however, it seems that they base the number of nominees/recipients on past years rates of people accepting the scholarship and attending USC, so they definitely award more than 100 trustee and 200 presidential, though a lot of times, they don’t attend. Last year they gave out like 130 trustee scholarships and like 220 presidential (there was a post with the exact number somewhere, these are rough estimates based on what I remember), however Dean’s I really have no clue, and I don’t think they do either. I want to say they just decide if they get a Dean’s scholarship like an acceptance, but harder, as there’s no interview, so if they get a lot of candidates that are above and beyond expectations they’ll award many Dean’s scholarships, and if there are only a few, and those few receive presidential/trustee, then they probably wont award many, but I’m fairly sure there’s not a number they’re aiming for on the Dean’s scholarship. My info on the Dean’s scholarship is just based on assumptions, so take it for what it’s worth.

here’s a .pdf of stats about the scholarships from last year…
http://www.usc.edu/admission/fa/private/docs/0809/Scholarships_2009.pdf

Trustee: approx. 100 awards
Presidential: approx. 200 awards
Dean’s: 250 awards

Hard Numbers
From the USC 2009 Freshman Profile http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/0910/FreshmanProfile2009.pdf:

In 2009, there were

132 Trustee Scholars
288 Presidential Scholars
137 Dean’s Scholars
232 National Merit Scholars

These are the numbers that actually matriculated to USC. Given that USC’s overall yield is about 30%, there were certainly many more than those numbers offered the scholarship. More than 20% of freshmen enter with one of the above scholarships.

I know that the total undergraduate enrollment is somewhere between 16,000 and 16,400. Any idea on what the approximate freshman head count is?

They aim for about 2600 - 2700 per year. In 2009, 2,869 freshmen enrolled. (As per the freshmen profile linked above.) They accepted 8,724 for a 33% yield.

This recent daily Trojan Article has some good info: [5.5 percent of applicants selected as scholarship finalists|Daily Trojan](5.5 percent of applicants selected as scholarship finalists - Daily Trojan)

Great info, sfgiants! We have wondered if the NMFs were included in the Presidential total - looks like they are. Nice to hear there are MORE scholarships up for grabs!

Interesting…I was wondering what would happen this year given the economic climate. I expect more recipients will matriculate this year too.

Thank you VERY MUCH sfgiants for the link to that informative article on scholarships! The facts straight from the horse’s mouth are appreciated. I also read several other articles while on the “Daily Trojan” site. The paper provides yet another way for us to learn something about USC.

I saw this article as well. Really enjoyed reading it! It made me feel a lot better when they pointed out the hard part is over (getting selected as a finalist). Now people just need to be themselves in the interview.

So doing some math, if they hope to enroll approximately 140 Trustee Scholars (given the 45% yield rate) they will most likely offer somewhere around 310 scholarships. If they want to enroll approximately 150 Presidential Scholarships (given the 28% yield rate) that means they will probably offer around 535 scholarships. So total, it looks like there may be approximately 850 scholarship offers put on the table.

A total of 1,100 people were invited to interview. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems unlikely that every single one of those people will actually come out to California for an interview. So let’s say 1,000 people actually attend an interview. That’s ~850 scholarship offers for ~1,000 people. Those chances don’t look too bad!

Now how did we figure out there are more scholarships up for grabs this year? The 2009 freshman profile seems to indicate that there are 288 Presidential Scholars in addition to 232 National Merit Scholars. The article says that next year they hope to enroll 150 Presidential Scholars and 150-200 National Merit Scholars. Wouldn’t this mean there are less this year?

Sorry, I am brand new around here and this might be a stupid question. If you receive an invitation as a scholarship finalist, does that mean you have it? or that simply your are within the pool from which they will select the actual recipients? We are coming from the Midwest and want to make sure we spend travel money wisely.
Thanks
PS. We already got an admission offer letter.

^ You must attend the explore USC event in order to interview for the scholarships - meaning they’re considering you for it, but won’t give it to you until they interview you.

OK. Thank you.
And thanks to all the posters. It is really a valuable and interesting forum.

I really liked reading this article. Thanks for posting the link sfgiants. Not everything written may be absolute fact, though, even though they are quoting the adcoms themselves. LOL. Wow, don’t I sound like the skeptic?

But since they invite less than 300 to interview for Trustee (there are only spots for 150 interviewees in each of 2 Trustee Explore session and not every session is fully attended–one recent year only 258 showed up to interview for Trustee) , and offer Trustee to less than that since not everyone interviewed will receive it, how can ~140 matriculated students taken from maybe 200ish? is 45% yield? I’m no math whiz, so perhaps I’m getting dizzy? The numbers for Presidential and NMF look a little wonky too when compared to # interviewed and past year recipients, so it’s hard to say what to make of it. I noticed Brunhold was quoted as saying they invited 1100 to interviews this year, but in the letter sent to applicants, didn’t they quote the number as 1000?

Not that any of this makes much difference, really. We try to pick up clues as they come.

^ Maybe they are taking their 45% yield from the three scholarships combined - the yield for Presidential would be lower than Trustee, and for Dean’s would approach the overall yield of 33%?

(I am one who, based on my observations here on college confidential, thinks that most finalists interviewed will be offered the scholarship.)

Here’s the important part:

If you’re a scholarship finalist, you’ll most likely receive some sort of scholarship.

Agree, soadquake! Most (if not ALL) finalists will receive some sort of scholarship. Usually, if you don’t get the one you are interviewed for, they offer the next level down. Of course, no one likes that at all. But a LOT will be getting the scholarship they are interviewed for, and some even get bumped UP so keep the faith.

I had a question that I’m hoping someone here could answer.

I was accepted “first wave” last week and while others have gotten letters asking them to interview for the Presidential or Trustee scholarships, I haven’t gotten anything. Does this mean I’m not getting anything?

Some basic stats: SAT: 2340, Indexed GPA: 4.65, National Merit Semi-finalist, fair share of extracirriculars and leadership

Haleigh… my d has the almost the same stat as u and also NMSF… ddn’t get any letter either. interestlngly… her friend in school had a lesser score rec a letter for presidental scholarship… ???
