Hard to get in?

Hi!

I'm very curious, how hard is it to get in to the BA acting program on schools like UCLA, NYU, Columbia and UCSD? how many applicants in general?

I'm an international student and I'm going to try and do a transfer to one of the schools above, do you think it's harder because I'm from Sweden? and what's the general opinion on mature students? I'm 21.

Regards,

I can’t say about anything but UCLA.
This year, UCLA only accepted 30 students due to budget cuts. Normally they accepted 60-65. They usually have 1200 who applied, and 700-800 who actually go through the auditions.

Given by the discussion on this board, and some of the stats that I have seen, all the top 10 of BA/BFA theater programs that require an audition are very hard to get into, Numbers range from 18/500 to 62/1200 and so on depending on the program. They are all very competitive and have hundreds of applicants every year. I don’t think that 21 would be regarded in any way as a mature student and in fact may even be an asset if you can demonstrate a level of maturity and an approach to acting that reflects added experience and knowledge. This is definitely the case for Juilliard who only accept about 10% of applicants who are straight out of high school. You would have to come to the USA for auditions, but fortunately they are all at the same time of year and can, probably, all be scheduled for the same geographic location.

If you do have a couple of university years under your belt, depending on the subjects, grades and credits, some universities like UCLA, may allow you to transfer into their Junior (3rd) year.
