Hard WR questions

1) The entire city, along with several nearby towns, is visual to anyone willing to climb the 126 steps to the top of the tower.

Why the first sentence is wrong? I can't detect an error!

2) Although the conference is over, the Mexican representative, like the other representatives, have declined to comment on the new trade agreement.

Why the second is wrong? I can't detect error here as well...

Where did you get this question? and what are the answers?

I’m guessing for number 1, “visual” is wrong - it has to be visible?

For number two, “have declined to comment” has to be “has declined to comment.”

Don’t take my word for it though, I may be wrong.

The above poster is right.

Yeah. When you are describing the state of being able to be seen, “visible” is correct, not visual. Visual acumen, beautiful visuals, vs. visibility, or visible mountains.

For the second sentence, what you have is a garden variety case of subject-verb agreement. Mexican representative is a singular noun, and despite the comma’d section “like the other representatives”, the verb is applied to the singular representative. So have should be changed to “has”.

Yep! Can’t say much more than what Steven F said.

Yes! Sure! How could I not notice an error in second sentence! The error in the first sentence can be refered as a “diction error”. Thanks guys.
