Hard Writing Question???

The question is:

(Neither) (A) the catalog nor the museum guide (explained) (B) the technical aspects of Picasso's paintings (thoroughly enough) (C) (to satisfy) (D) inquisitive art students.

The answer was supposed to be E, but I chose B. My reason was that since the sentence was a generalization, referring to all inquisitive art students rather than a specific group, it should have been in the simple present tense. Thus, I though B should have read explains and not explained.

If it had said the inquisitive art student, I would understand why this would have been no error.

Can someone tell me if i'm wrong, and, if so, why?

I think you’re overthinking it. On top of that, you’re changing the meaning of the sentence by changing the verb tense. Never change the meaning of the sentence.

thanks. anyone else got an opinion. bump bump

The tense is correct. E is the answer

I agree with BigIs. The verb tense is correct so E would make sense as the answer.
