So the city of Berkeley voted to impeach president Bush and according to those very reliable rumors, it's possible to get weed at every corner. Well, I'm NOT a flaming liberal, NOT a druggie, and would really like to go to a school with a student body comprised of diverse political beliefs (among other things). Is Berkeley as liberal as it seems? ** IS THERE POLITICAL DIVERSITY ON CAMPUS? **

There exists an annoyingly loud student group on campus called the Berkeley College Republicans. It claims to be the largest group on campus but from what I can see, there's barely any active members. I think the reason it has so many members are that 1. BCR lies/misrepresents their group profile and 2. its pretty much the only prominent conservative group among hundreds of smaller "liberal" groups. If liberalism is that big of a problem for you, I encourange you not to attend Berkeley unless you are at least a "moderate."

Oh no - I'm basically socially liberal but economically conservative. I'm a moderate. I just can't stand *** extremely *** self-righteous, bleeding heart, touchy/feely liberals.

honestly, most colleges slant to the left because people tend to want to change things in college.
there's definitely more leftleaning groups on campus, but the thing about Cal is that either way, everything you've been taught is gonna be challenged.

And on pot @ everycorner,...hate to break it to you, but most colleges in california are gonna be easy to obtain pot, especially in the bay area. Cal's not as great as santa cruz at finding cheap good grass, but you rarely see schwag and it's easy and cheap to get.

BCR is less annoying than calprig and other in your face liberal organizations on the berkeley campus. unfortunately there are a lot of flaming liberals there. (i am not talking about bush hater kind of liberal, im talking about the extreme treehugger, ignorant hippies). but berkeley is a big school so im sure u will find ur own niche. the city definitely sucks.

the bay area is awesome, so is the city of berkeley, there's plenty to do, plenty to see. If you don't like urban/metropolis settings, and the open campus, and you're shy and introverted, you might not like it, but there's something for everyone here, it's a big place.

Honestly, it's not as liberal/hippie as I thought it was going to be. Berkeley has turned into more of an academically rigorous institution more than a place for tree huggers. Yes, there are quite few left leaning groups on campus - but you won't feel isolated because you are aren't a flaming liberal.

The image of Berkeley as a "hardcore liberal" place is extremely misconstrued. The city of Berkeley itself is, yes, very liberal, but the campus? Not so much. There's a certain segment that definitely is very liberal/extreme left-leaning, but that definitely doesn't define the entire campus. Frankly, much of the campus is just apolitical, which I do think is unfortunate.

Dood, sorry, but there's no way in hell that an 800 person class in BERKELEY like PS179 are/were right-leaning. alot of people in the non-socailscience/humanities are apolitical, but it's still Berkeley.

It's not "still Berkeley". Orientals tend to be either politically apathetic or conservative. Also, students in general are quite conscientious. The image of hippy liberals flaming any and all neo-con speak is false.
